it's not an "option" and all the knobs have always been plastic.  BUT 
when the
MnM was released, it had tighter knobs with more resistance (though the 
same
design).  Elektron started using the same knobs on the MD at that 
point.  so if yours
is more than a year old, the knobs will turn a lot easier than a new 
one.

yes, if you hold FUNCTION on power up you'll see "test mode" as an 
option. I
know the knobs can be tested by simply turning them in test mode.  I/O, 
I'm not
sure about.  But if it's like the MnM, test mode means that the inputs 
are routed
directly to the outputs. so if you feed a line-level signal into it and 
then test to
see that the output levels are the same, that can be your test :-)
