MIDI Joystick for SFX-60

MIDI Joystick for SFX-60

2004-10-25 by Scott Kellogg

A cursory search of the message archives did not reveal anything, so I
am asking the list.

I have purchased an SFX-60, which I dearly love for its sound and
portability. I can get away from the computer over lunch and write on
it, in my cube. Very nice.

However, the functionality of the SFX-6 joystick seems to be part of the
overall Monomachine experience. At home, I hook up an Oxygen 8 to the
MnM, and that works very well. I would also like to hook up a MIDI
joystick. Could someone recommend a product that can replicate the
functionality of the SFX-6 joystick?

/Scott

I'm pretty sure that the MicroKontrol works.

Thank you for the recommendation. However, this item (Korg
MicroKontrol) appears to be a large control surface. All I'm interested
in is the joystick. Preferably a little one, at that, rather than one
of those ridiculous gaming joysticks.

Try the LV-1. It has a very little joystick. I don't know how to set it up,
though. I use the standard templates for Live.

This, too, is a nice little control surface, but it seems to offer more
than just a joystick. I wonder if there are any kits to contstruct a
joystick. Seems like they are hard to find as standalone items.

I also use the SFX60 and have search for some kind of X-Y-Z
controller I still have to make a choice but so far I found the
following:

The Mercurial STC-1000 single touch controller (X-Y-Z)
http://www.thinkmig.com/stc1000.html

From Analogue Solutions the DJMC Dual Joystick MIDI
Controller (X-Y)
http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~concuss/concussor/djmc.htm

And the last one is very expensive but major cool the Haken
Audio Continuum Fingerboard (X-Y-Z)
http://www.HakenAudio.com/Continuum/

Try http://www.doepfer.de/home_e.htm they also have components that you can build your own using their assembled boards and interface cabling, including small industrial joystick actuators, I think.

This thing looks really cool. I like the simplicity of its design. Its
multifunctionality looks intriguing, especially the ability to be a
fingerpad for tapping in drum rhythms. It's not too expensive, either.

ahh I see... I didn't know you wanted just the joystick. I always said
they should have
made the SFX-60 just a couple inches wider and included the joystick
(and possibly
a power supply).

I think this is a great idea. However, it is possible that fewer people
would purchase the SFX-6 if this were the case, since the joystick seems
to be a major component of the unit.

very true. I asked Elektron and they said that they simply hadn't
thought of doing that;
they just wanted something in the form factor of the MD. but they then
cited the above
as a reason not to do it.

I'm sure it was a bit of both. There are usually numerous influences in
important design decisions.

Fortunately, there seems to be a few aftermarket options that offer
similar funtionality to the joystick.

If you don't mind finding your own joystick mechanism and casing, you can
make exactly what you want with the Doepfer pocket electronic kit.

http://www.doepfer.de/pe.htm

I think it is probably hard to find such a small controller because it is
so inexpensive/tempting to add control elements once you have the basic
MIDI interface electronics.

I guess there's no excuse not to know how to solder, now, is there?

I think one of the best, and cheapest replacements for the missing
joystick is a used ~$120 US Korg Kaoss Pad 1. I think that the
default CC/pitch mod settings on the SFX-6's joystick are the same as
the KP-1's default output. I haven't tried my KP with my MnM, since
I have the SFX-6, but I imagine one of the best things about using it
is the "remember mode" that keeps the output position of
the "joystick" at the last remembered position. This way, you can
tweak away, and leave the beast cranking through sequences at
that "sweet spot" while you twiddle other knobs. The joystick always
returns to zero - with the KP-1 it is optional whether or not you
want it to. The other thing I like about the KP-1 is that you can
drop two fingers at different locations, hopping from one x-y
position to the other, or the average of the two if both fingers are
down at once. This allows for discrete jumps in the joystick
settings.

Given how impressed I am with the bugger... why has it been in the
closet for over a year? Hmmm... I guess it has to do with the fact
that I bought it for live performances which I vowed never to do
again shortly after a "rockstar" noise-head threw my gear across the
stage at Phi-Phenomena "Never Forgets". The KP-1 survived - but my
desire to perform live again didn't.

Excellent tip! Now I only need a MnM! ;-)

that...

Ah, shucks. Don't let the punters get you down.

I was thinking that the Kaoss pas would be a good controller. It also
happens to be an effect unit, which is good seeing as the MnM has 6
outputs ...

The Kaoss pad seems to send X-Y, while the MnM joystick sends X-Y-Z.
What does the Z functionality do?

Just a wild guess... Pressure sensitivity? (z direction is down/up in
the coordinate system)

That's what I figured. I was wondering how this is implemented in the
