MD: Duplicating patterns

MD: Duplicating patterns

2005-04-03 by Mark Hamburg

My Machinedrum arrived Friday and I'm having great fun with it. (It's
got one knob that's a little sticky in one spot, but I'm hoping that's
something that will clear up with a little use.)

Is there a way to duplicate a pattern while the machine is playing?
Yes, I can copy, switch patterns, and paste, but that potentially plays
the second pattern very briefly. What I want to do is duplicate the
pattern so that I can tweak on it and then jump back to the original
pattern without any apparent breaks in the music.

Thanks.
Mark

Hi
i am currently looking for a Monomachine or SFX60. If you know someone who is selling one, just let me know.
  Thanks.

mark,
glad to hear that you're getting along well with your MD. I'm sure
you'll
grow to love it even more in time, as pretty much everyone else who's
ever touched one has :-)

unfortunately, you can't copy/paste patterns to a new destination
without
first changing to that destination. that would be a great feature,
though.

Its so irking to have the pause! For the cash that I spent on it I
would expect it.

would be nice to be able to copy and paste track per
track too. like if i want my bass line on machine 1 to
copy only that would be cool

it's been awhile since i used the machinedrum, but i
thought this could be done. iirc, it's something like this:

select the track you wish to copy
enable record mode
press [function] plus [record] to copy - you should get a message
like "copy track".
select the track {and pattern, if necessary} you'd like to paste this onto
press [function] plus [stop] {i think} to paste the track
onto the new destination

...or have i misunderstood you {maybe you mean in this
context of copying and pasting into an inactive pattern}?

[pasting a pattern to another before switching to it]

...and since you have such a clear idea what you expect from your
instrument after spending all your money on it, maybe you have a
clear idea how it would be implemented in a intuitive way into the
Machinedrum interface?

It's sometimes very interesting to read how some users find specific
features obvious and essential.

Re: [elektron] MD: Duplicating patterns

2005-04-05 by Mark Hamburg

My wish for this was inspired by my use of the Next Loop copy function
on the Echoplex Digital Pro.

I respect your call for me to think about user interface since a
feature without a viable user interface isn't a feature.

So, how about:

	Hold down bank key.
	Press stop/paste.
	Press key for destination pattern.

A slightly less versatile approach that does the duplication at copy
time would be:

	Hold down the function key.
	Press record/copy.
Press the destination pattern for a duplicate.

This would insist on staying within the same bank of patterns and would
move the duplication to the copy operation.

Either would work for me.

I'm new enough to the Machinedrum that I'm probably missing something
that these sequences should be allowing, but a quick test didn't seem
to indicate functionality that would be severely inhibited by such a
change, In either case, it would be nice at the duplicate step to show
which patterns already have data. In the first case, this is actually
already being done since the paste would just be a shortcut on the
front of pattern selection.

yes it can! in the Monomachine, one can even copy/paste individual pages
of a track (hold down the page key while pressing copy to copy, then hold
down page while pressing paste)!

Re: [elektron] MD: Duplicating patterns

I was extremely happy to find this feature. I like to do my sound
design with a 1 bar pattern, then stretch the scale to 4 measures.
This will automatically copy measure 1 across measures 2, 3, and 4.
Then, I can make a variation on 2, copy it to 4, and change 4 a little.
  This gives an A B A C pattern across the 4 measures.
