Getting the Setup Right.....

Getting the Setup Right.....

2005-06-23 by djmitymike

Whats up everyone!

I'm a newb to this board, but have been posting on the MC-909 group
site for a while.... My machinedrum is coming in the mail today, and
i'm looking for some opinion on how 2 set it all up....

Gear List:

MC-909 (which i do most of my sequencing on)
Access Virus B
MACHINEDRUM ( I can't tell you how stoked i am to make my own drums)
M-Audio 18/14 (8 audio ins, 4 outs, 1 MIDI in/Out)'
M-Audio MIDISport 2x2 usb <--> Computer or through
Cubase on my crappy computer, (i use it for basically recording and
audio mastering)

Right now, I have the 909 rumming the virus, and the computer synced
up to the 909's MIDI, but when i'm writing, i'm using the MIDIsport as
a through....

I was amped when i found out you can use MIDI to trigger the MD for
not only individual drum hits, but patterns, and I believe its going
to give me some major flexibility when writing, as well as finally
being able to get my kick drums tuned the way i'd like....

Basically, I guess i could phrase this as curious to know if anyone
has a similar setup, and if so what did you do with it?

Thanks all, and glad to meet you all!

AudioFunkTion

P.S. I write mostly electro and drum n bass....

Congrats!

your rig just got infinitely cooler

for me, the md clock is too accurate to have something
else driving it (unless its an mpc). And the
sequecing capabilites of the MD paramater locking
system, together with its song mode macro-sequencing,
make controlling the MD with anything else, far less
effective than using its own native system.

(Try setting up a cubase midi project that has the
same level of control and you will see what I mean)

Because the MD has such a powerful, all encompassing
system, it can be a bit difficult to streamline into a
setup. It likes to do its own thing.

Personally, I MD sequence with its native parameter
locking system. But run all the individual outs into
their own tracks in a multi-track recorder (all kicks
in one channel, snares on another, sfx on another
,etc)

That way you preserve the wild dynamics inherent in
parameter locked sequencing. But get to add computer
power to the indivual sounds AND get to incorporate
the MD in a DAW project along with all your softies.

Or you can add one shot midi triggers, to make custom
MD drum stabs for different parts of your project, and
just bounce them to track. But you lose the sound
morphing dynamics of full lock sequencing, and that
really is the essence of machinedrumming.

anyhow, making music is going much more fun and
immediate for you. But you might need to get creative
to have MD play well with others.

Infinatley cooler? now that is definatly a positive thing to hear....

The way i imagined it was pretty much writing drum tracks seperatly
from everything else, and having the MD operate on its own, and having
the sync signal going to the 909 which will be operated remotly. i
think i'll be able to write tunes on both machines seperatly, and play
them together, or at least thata what i'm hoping.

i guess i'll find out when i get home today and rip the box open like
a rabid monkey on a crate of bannanas....

glad i got the first post out of the way, since i imagine you guys are
probably close 2 the only human contact i'll have for next few months,
and the studio becomes a cocoon....

someone tell my wife i'm still alive in a couple weeks, ya?

Hey, maybe you can post some of your work to elektron-users.com.
People seem to like hearing MD/UW stuff there.

Band widows. It's sad, but true. ;)

Something cool to do first might be to get your other gear, 909, virus, etc,
tempo synced via midi to the MD and just press play on the MD and jam.
