expensive BD :)

or 'A different way to use the MD'... Last friday, we had a huge night here in Brussels devoted to the 'micromusic' community. For those not knowing, it encompasses the broad genre of people using old gameconsole & computer to do music. Being part of that scene (I'm writing tracks exclusively using gameboys), I had the priviledge of being part of the live acts in the middle of really respected people from the scene... Now, if there's a thing gameboys lacks, it is in the bass department. I always wanted to have a way to add nice deep end to my kicks and since I have a MD and that for once I didn't have to carry my rig in some remote locations, I wanted to use the TRX-BD2 to double the kicks in some section of the songs, where the whole thing would get pumpin. Of course, gameboy are a little tricky; you can sychronize them using MIDI clock but it meant using the MD as master which felt a bit awkward since I am use to the sequencer I am using in the gameboy and kept wanting using it as the center piece. So I decided to investigate the audio input trigger.. since they're expecting audio signal, I was pretty sure I could find a sound from the gameboy that would trigger the MD appropriately... Sure enough, after a little digging, I fould a bass sound that would steadily trigger the MD and since I could synch this one with my main gameboy, I created some basic pattern containing 1,2,4 hits that would give the filthiest kick from the MD. The whole trick worked like a charm, so there I was, using the expensive MD to produce only kick sound, triggered from a supercheap $20 element. It was a lot of fun. For those interested; there's a couple of pictures at the following url: http://www.benetbene.net/site/Gallery/microbeatbeach.htm u can see the MD in front of the crowd and the green color gameboy (foremost one) used to trigger it. I thought I'd share the story :) PS: If there's any sweedze around, I'll be playing in Stockholm next saturday (but without the MD this time) at the next microdisko ( http://www.microdisko.net/ ). Come and join us ! Cheers, M-.-n http://discodirt.10pm.org
