The only reason not to get one is if you don't have the time to put in
to learning it. It's a fantastic synth with deep modulation options.

Yes, it could, but some machines are more immediate in their rewards
than others. You can bang out beats on an ER-1 (or Machinedrum for that
matter) really quickly, whereas the Evo might take a little longer to
get music from, depending on your experience level with synthesis.

Couldn't that be said for any machine though? or at
least any machine that isn't made by Korg and actually
sounds good.

I own the original... if I had enough $$, I'd buy the key version
immediately and follow up with a rack version for 8 voice goodness.

It has one master seq track with 4 rows that control different parameters.

What's with all the 'this sounds like crap' talk? It's utter nonsense.
Somebody with enough talent can make a kazoo, a distortion pedal, and
some butthair sound like a masterpiece.

I'm confused about the sequencer on this... does it
have 4 tracks (like the Monomachine has 6) or just one
track? One the site it says 4 x 16... but other
places state that it does not. Can someone confirm?

Yes, but the ER-1 sounds like crap and in the end
takes alot of work to get it to sound good.

The original evolver is a monosynth with 4 oscillators. There are also
four 16 step sequencers. These sequencers can be routed to just about
every parameter and be used as such for cool step sequence modulations.
Seq 1 triggers the envelope for all the oscillators or can be routed
to another parameter.

So since it is a mono synth, technically it's only 1 track voice wise,
but you really do have 4 separate sequencers to modulate the sound in
all kinds of cool ways

The poly evolver rack and keyboard versions are basicall 4 evolvers
packed into one box, for a total of four voices.

Multiple keyboard, rack, and table evolvers can be chained to allow
yourself to have more voices.

Re: [elektron] Dave Smith Evolver

2005-09-26 by Ravi Ivan Sharma

There are 4 discreet 16 step sequencers. But the the Evolver tabletop is a 1 voice synth. BUT, since each voice consists of 4 oscillators, it is possible to route each of of the sequences to a different oscillators pitch parameter and thereby create polyphonic sounding sequences.

Think of it this way, in a single voice synth, there are numerous destinations that can be routed to from LFOs, Envelopes or other modifiers such as aftertouch or a wheel, etc. These destinations include things like filter cutoff frequency, resonance amount, oscillator 1 volume, oscillator 1 pitch, oscillator 2 pitch, etc, etc.

Each of the 4 sequences can have one destination. IN this way, you can make poly sounding sequences even though it is *just* a single voice synth.

So, no, it is not like the monomachine, but it can, in certain ways be made to sound like more than one voice (even though it isn't)

There are examples of one voice multi osc sequences up at http://www.davesmithinstruments.com/evolver/sounds.html

I happened to have authored this one which demonstrates this effect: http://www.dsisynth.com/Sounds/set1/01raviseq01.mp3

I'm confused about the sequencer on this... does it
have 4 tracks (like the Monomachine has 6) or just one
track? One the site it says 4 x 16... but other
places state that it does not. Can someone confirm?

I'm not that talented ;)

Seriously, though, there are some incredible beatboxers out there. Just a
mic and their mouths, making bangin' tunes.

Re: [elektron] Dave Smith Evolver

Yeah, I am aware of that... i like beatboxing and I
wasn't saying you can't make good music with cheap
gear...but I'd rather use some quality gear that makes
life easier than something like the Korg ER-1 which
takes a ton of time to make sound good. I'm not
talking about programming...the thing is easy to
program...but it just sounds so damn flat that you
have to process the hell out of it in order to make it
sound good. That is not the case with the Elektron
stuff...or even Reason or Live IMHO.

It sounds good by itself, then esp with just bit of eq and compression. It
depends what kind of music you want to make, the ER-1 is made for electro
type stuff, don't go trying to do something like drum and bass with it. No
tool is necessarily crap, you just need the right tool for your job.
