Decent Mixer under $100

Decent Mixer under $100

2005-09-29 by taco6

I'm going to have a Machinedrum soon to go along with my Monomachine.
Since I was mostly software before (outside of pre-amps, mics etc) and
only had the Monomachine, I've never had the use for a mixer. Now I
do...so I can hear the Machinedrum and Monomachine together. Anyone
know of a decent mixer for under $100.00. They exist, but I'm not sure
which ones are going to color my sound for the worse. What should I
look at and what should I avoid?

You could get one of the little Behringer mixers, or, alternatively, run
the Mono into the MD inputs and not have to mess with a mixer.

Good idea about the MD inputs... thanks.

I have been battling with mixers for years, I keep adding either more pre-amps to my computer for more virtual mixing channels, or buying new analog consoles to meet my live needs...

I guess it all depends on how many channels you need etc.... do you want to go analog or virtual or digital mixing...

Like Scott said though, You can always plug your MnM outputs to the Mdrum inputs, something I end up doing a lot to free up channels....

If you want to blow tons of $$ on a live mixer i recommend the xone 464,
If you want to save $$ the soundcraft compact series is both affordable and a blast to use...

Imo think you should go up a little more than that. Your buying super
expensive gear made to get specific sounds, they deserve a good path to get
to your ears.

Although I think this Yamaha will do nicely

http://tinyurl.com/9n9ne

Or this Soundcraft

http://tinyurl.com/9vvzl

I usually avoid behringer if there are other options

I was thinking of that soundcraft...but how about
going into the Machinedrums Audio Ins... is there any
reason not to do this?

I believe the only downside to using the MDrum ins is losing MDrum tracks, but I could be mistaken....

The soundcraft compact series is extremely affordable....

It also doesn't sound as good. I think the machine drum REALLY needs to go through an analog mixer to sound really nice....otherwise it sounds boring and lifeless imho. *ready for the attacks* lol...i think thats most drum machines too. 909 included, without using a mixing board on the individual sounds its like :-/ I think eqing and other various mixing effects on drums really makes peoples drums sound unique...

I haven't used my MnM in's yet, actually I forgot I had em!

Do you need to use up a track on the MnM or MD to have that audio in
running,? that could be a con if true.

+ I have the habit of over loading the MnM outputs sometimes on purpose :) I
wonder if you got some crazy sounds going on with both the MD and MnM in
full effect you would run into clarity problems.

You do, but doesn't the MD have 16 tracks? That's not as much of a
sacrifice as one of the 6 MmM tracks.

This might _not_ be what you are looking for, but I would buy a
soundcard with multiple inputs and it might not be much more than
$100.00. In studio environment it would be more handy; you could
record both at the same time to different tracks, not messing with
mixing volumes and so on. On the other hand, if you are going for
live, then mixer would be better. Just a thought...

Re: [elektron] Re: Decent Mixer under $100

1. Get a mixer

2. turn computer off

3. Play :)

Of course you could do a firewire interface like an 828 that will give you
multiple computer in's and also doubles as a standalone (computer off)
mixer, but that will be more than $100 :)

I have the sound card in question, but I like to use
these machines seperate from my computer...and only
hook them to the computer when recording. I'm not
anti-computer at all...I think it is silly to be anti-
computer. It is a tool just like everything
else...but sometimes it is nice to use something else.

I'll probably just get the $99 soundcraft and be done
with it. I'm afraid of the behringer stuff.

Not that this is the best way to do this but, I have a 8X8 i/o sound card, so I plug my instruments into the 8 inputs, route them to the 8 outputs which go to my analog mixer...
Its a huge overkill but,

This way i can have the fun of using a analog console while recording the tracks onto my computer for mixing later on,

If i like the sounds, but messed up on the analog faders, I can always redo the volume changes on my computer to save for a later date....

not exactly in the 100$ range however...
