Machinedrum Contest?

Machinedrum Contest?

2005-10-10 by taco6

I noticed in the files section there was a machinedrum contest. What was that about?

Re: [elektron] Machinedrum Contest?

We used to all submit an mp3 jam and a pattern+kit using entirely
sounds generated from a single machine, which was the focus of the
'current' contest. Everyone settled on a single machine to use for
all the sounds and had a go.

Machinedrum Contest

2005-10-11 by tahvenaine2002

Ok! Let's have a contest. It was fun at the time. The rules are easy.
We pick up one single machine which can be used to make a pattern +
song of it (16 pads can be used of course). People record them without
any effects and submit them here as mp3 format (let's keep them around
one minute). The deadline will be at end of the month, when we will
vote for the best entry. Anyone wants to join? Now we just need to
choose the specific machine we are all going to use. Who ever suggest
the machine first; it will be used for contest, Ok? Now hurry up
people, what machine are we going to use?

ps. For combatibiality lets use the MD-classic as a contest machine.
UW has very nice ram-machines, but let's not use them, because they
move out of the synthesis stage and does make idea behind this totally
different (and not everyone has it).

Machinedrum Contest: EFM-CB

2005-10-11 by tahvenaine2002

So people,

EFM-CB is voted for machine to be used in a MD-contest. Rules are simple:

1.You can use only use EFM-CB machine (assign it to all 16 pads if you
want).
2. Make one pattern with it.
3. Use song mode to compile your contest entry.
4. Record it dry (no other than MD effects allowed)
5. Convert your art to MP3 and submit it here
6. Deadline is at the end of this month, we will do a poll for it
where everyone can vote their favourite

ps. MD-UW is nice (especially the Ram-machines), but it would span the
rules for others too much and wouldn't be logical, so no UW (maybe
another contest with MD-UW).

Now go make your noise!

Re: [elektron] Machinedrum Contest: EFM-CB

sounds good and fun too

> 4. Record it dry (no other than MD effects allowed)
so, to clarify, md reverb / delay on tracks is allowed?

> 2. Make one pattern with it.
> 3. Use song mode to compile your contest entry.
I'm a bit unclear as to what we can do... why use the song mode if
it's only one pattern? is this just to make it of a certain length or
can we do things like use song mode to chop the pattern up and /or
mute various parts etc?

as one of the admins of this group, I'll have to step in and note that
this group does not have much file storage. when the contests were
happening,
I had to use my own personal web space to store the old contests. in
fact, one
of the main reasons that the elektron-users.com site was created was
to allow
the contests to function much easier and to a wider audience. also,
there are
several people over there that would love to contribute who don't
even read
this list. so my suggestion would be to move the contest over to
that web
site. there's more storage there as well as room to make comments on
individual submissions and a more extensive voting system. the
contest can
occur here, but i don't know if i'll be able to archive the
submissions and
i think the audience will be much smaller.

also, one of the rules of the old contests was that you were allowed
to use the
CTR machines as well. this made things MUCH more interesting and the
submissions were WAY out there and I personally learned a ton from doing
my own as well as downloading others' submissions to see how they did
what they did.

one of the old rules was also that sysex uploading is required.
this makes it more of a learning experience instead of just a contest.
others can learn MD tricks of yours that you otherwise might not have
even
thought to share in the normal forum.

also, there's usually a time limit. something like 45 seconds or a
minute
is pretty fair and even and will keep file sizes reasonable.
anything less than 45
seconds makes it very difficult to create decent entries.

Yes, we need clarification.

Machinedrum Contest: EFM-CB (Clarify)

Answers to few questions:

> > 4. Record it dry (no other than MD effects allowed)

Yes, MD reverb and delay are allowed. External effects and such
'polishing' isn't allowed.

One pattern, but you can twist it in song mode anyway you want.
Chopping stuff, mute, changing Bpms and so on. To limit our stuff in
one pattern is going be the creative thing here, which forces us to
think differently.

Yes I like the idea. I'm willing to upload my stuff to
elektron-users.com and I'm sure there are other people who can do it
too. Also the old rules still apply (forgot the ctrl-machines
totally). So let's see how much people we are going to gather this way
(well, I'm in it for certain).

what are ctrl machines? and please let me know once
the final designation for the contest has been
established. Thanks.

ctrl-machines let you sequence values of other machines (or all
machines). You can try out changing all pitches of all machines by
holding function + turning pitch-knob (note that this alter the kit,
so better save before you do it). With ctrl-machines you can lock
these changes with parameter locks and so on. Try it. Ctrl-machines
came with the OS 1.12. If you haven't got the latest OS, get it from
Elektron (OS 1.30).

Sorry, I've been away from computer for awhile. EFM-CB contest will
happen. Scott will put it up on the elektron-users.com at this
weekend, no worries. There we have more storage for uploads (yahoo
doesn't have rather much).

I suggest everyone to participate. It is not about who makes a nicest
pattern, but about discovering the MD in a new fresh way. When we had
earlier contest like this in Yahoo, I was _always_ suprised how much
you can still learn from MD and how _different_ results were between
people. The best part is to listen other peoples work, it's very
inspiring to hear so many different styles and such. You will literaly
learn different ways of thinking by participating. And it will be much
more fun, the more people have! So let's start tweaking (the machine
was EFM-CB)! :)

Toni.
