MD incentive questions

MD incentive questions

2006-04-19 by -0behn desu0-

Hey there all.

The only thing I own for Elektron is the Sid. And I freaking love that little guy. I have some extra money to blow on gear right now, and the choice is coming down to getting an MD (I've lusted after one for a WHILE... but they are NOT cheap!), or upgrading two or three other pieces in my home studio.

My setup right now....

Elektron Sid
DSI Evolver (mono desktop)
Korg EMX-1
Korg ms2000r
Motu 828mkII.... and a well spec'd pc, some hardware efx units I like, my basses (with an efx pedalboard setup) and a chintzy little m-Audio oxygen 8 for a controller.

SO... I would probally upgrade the oxygen8 and probally get some tweaky efx units or some soft synth stuff.

I only had two questions....

1) Please tell me the things you love about your MD that would talk me into buying one?

2) Where can I go to get some hands-on time with one? I live in Berkeley, CA.

Thanks much!

the only reseller of Elektron stuff in the BAy Area is Robotspeak on
Haight street. But they may or may not have any in store and/or for
display.

Re: MD incentive questions

2006-04-19 by hymen_blaster

Well, here's my perspective:

I just recently got my MD, but I've had a monomachine and sidstation
for a while and loved them. I sold a TR-909 to get my MD and I don't
regret it at all. It replaces a rack of drum machines I've been
hauling around for ages (Oberheim DMX, SCI Drumtraks, Zoom RT234,
circuitbent HR-16) and I haven't yet found a style that I'd want to
do that the MD couldn't handle. Chiptunes? Yep. House? Yep. Trance?
Yep. Techno? Yep. Ambient? Yep.

This is quite a statement about a single drum machine! I am convinced
that the MD is the ultimate drum machine for live use. Nothing even
comes close for flexibility and stability in a live setting!

Anyway, I haven't even gotten to my favorite part - pattern
programming. This is where the MD really shines. Before owning the MD
I used to be pretty lazy about drums; I'd just loop a midi clip in
Live and record a basic drum beat, copy it a few times and add
progressively more elements to each descending clip so that I ended
up with a few variations and then I'd just copy and paste into tracks
and then I was done. The MD really revitalized my interest in drum
programming because 1.) it is so easy 2.) it is insanely flexible 3.)
it sounds soooooo goood!

Now excuse me, I have some music to make :)
