preferred power supply unit

2001-07-03 by rogers@cadence.com

There was a mention a while back in this list of how much better
the PSU (power supply unit) supplied by Elektron with later units
is than, say, the Radio Shack model that meets Elektron's
specifications. My (used) unit came with the Radio Shack PSU, and
the 60hz hum is terrible. I e-mailed Elektron about their PSU but
got no answer. Can anyone tell me the exact info about the one
Elektron is now providing so I can get one? Or, if anyone knows
where they are available, that would be even better.

Many thanks.

This isn't related to SIDStation, but I was wondering if these power
supplies would work with certain videogame systems, specifically the NES
and Super NES? I mean they all use the same voltage and the plug size
where it connects to the unit (not the wall plug), right? As it is now
I have to unplug everything else if I want to play a game on another
system... if I could use these power supplies instead of the big giant
boxy ones that take up and unused slot underneath that'd be great. I
don't know anything about electronics so I'd better ask before doing
something stupid that might fry my eyebrows off :)

Definitely get the power supply from Elektron.
Way back when, there was a discussion on the list about the power supply.
So I ordered one. Cut the noise level in half at least!
I had come to terms with the noise level when I got the Sidstation
originally, but with the proper PSU it's ALMOST not necessary to use a
gate...unless your doing some serious recording.
Also, instead of using a threshold type noise gate. I use my old Bass
Station Rack as a midi controlled gate. Then you get an extra envelope and
an extra filter! I love having the extra filter on the Sidstation to soften
it up for the sweet strings and sweeps. :)

You can order these from Elektron? How much are they?
I'm currently using a PSU from Radio Shack (it's a
regulated one though, so very little noise) but I'm
anal retentive and enjoy having matching hardware :)

It was about 35 US dollars with shipping...if I remember correctly.
Close to that anyways. I just emailed Elektron. Got here in two or three
days.

Dude. they're so worth it. they're modified wall-wart
style. Which means they fit in the space of a normal two-pronged
AC plug without covering up other outlets like regular wall-warts.

Optional Rant:

It's just another example of European differences from American style.
In America, we'd say "Just keep stacking up power strips and TAKING
UP LOTS OF SPACE..." because we HAVE lots of space here.

Only too soon though, it will all fill up, and we'll choke and gag
like a family living in a Waste Food Dumpster. But that will be
long after the current power figures are deceased, so why do anything
now to stop it?
