[Monomachine] Trig Portamento / Legato Trig Modes {need help}

On page 40 and 41 on MnM's manual there's an explanation about the Trig Track's portamento and legato trig modes. I've read it about 10 times now, and I can't get past it. Does anyone know how to explain what they do in other words? I especially get confused with the tip elektron recommends about leaving legato amp/flt/lfo ON for staccato bass sounds. Anyone? Cheers.
