Tips on getting rid of MD's hiss?????

Tips on getting rid of MD's hiss?????

2008-01-16 by roby

Hello, I never realized how noisy the MD is until last night when I hooked
it up to a distortion pedal. There's so much white noise in the
background I can't use it with distortion as I want it too. Anyone have
any tips on how to get rid of this?

Thanks

Not noticing this myself, are you using lots of bit or sample rate
reduction in the kits?

Are you using a reamping device to match the levels and
impedance? That white noise can't be heard when you're
going directly from the MD's lines out to a mixer or audio
interface's lines in. Guitar pedals expect instrument level
signals with high impedance, so you would typically need the
Reamp or Radial X-Amp to keep everything quiet.

OK,

Well my signal is MD -> Boss DS-1 distortion pedal -> mixer. I've always
noticed white noise in the background of my MD, quiet enough to not be
able to hear it when mixed with other gear, but noticeable by itself.
Somehow the pedal is making it worst. Turning the master volume knob to
half way makes the distortion pedal react better to the MD's signal. So
you're saying I should reamp all MD outputs to avoid this white noise??
Thanks for the advice

I've never experienced this with other older drum machines...

No, I tried it with a simple analog kit with no sample rate reduction.

I would say that most of the time, you'd need to reamp the
MD if it's going into a guitar pedal. Some pedals have the
headroom for it, but I haven't used many that fit that
description.

If you're getting hiss when going from MD to line level
mixer, then there's something wrong with your MD, mixer or
kit.

I've never experienced hiss with other MDs ;)

Yeah there is quite some noise with the MD, I use a DI box to go into
my guitar level gear. The hiss itself when recording doesn't bother me
so much, it's quite "smooth". However it adds up when stacking loops.

My guess is that the DS-1 is based on a compressor like the DOD attack. Any
compressor set up wrong would bring the hiss level up noticeably. Chances
are, it probably amplifies and makes your guitar's noise noticeable too.
Try another pedal, or add a noise-gate?

have you tried using the aux sends on the mixer to rout to the effects
pedal?
