MD midi help

MD midi help

2001-07-22 by Ben

Hey guys, I finally have my little home studio (mostly) set up and
tried to get things to interact with my MD through midi and have
had almost no success. I really wish this had some indicators to
say it was sending or receiving data. I tried setting up a FreeMIDI
profile and controlling the MD through my midi express and
when that did nothing I noticed that when it was playing my
interface wasn't receiving any data from the MD. So I did what
little I could and tried hooking up the MD to my Juno 106 and
despite playing an unvarying loop I ended up with beat synched
triggers that didn't have a discernable pattern and weren't
consistent. Now I know that the MD sends on 4 channels instead
of one and I figure that the notes hit on the Juno were the
corresponding track's notes according the the MD's appendix,
but I can't figure out why when I play each of the 16 sounds once
in a 16 beat loop, only a few trigger MIDI events and it's not
always the same sounds. So, anyone have this working or have
any advice? It was really a bummer to not be able to finally make
some recordings using the MD - actually I did record the weird
triggering of the Juno with the MD playing each sound once per
loop cycle at 170 bpm. It's kinda funny. Oh, also I noticed another
bug - it seems like when I switch to a new set (perhaps not that
often) and turn the big knob to the right it switches machine
focus from the bass drum over to the claps without hitting
anything in between. I don't know if it's related to the other knob-
value bug. Anyone else pick up on that?
    Danke,

    Ben

Hi Ben
This "value jump" also occurs on my MD when I turn the knobs to
adjust a sound, especially when I'm recording parameter locks.
According to Daniel at Elektron this will be fixed with the new OS.

Ah, nuts...!

I've been scrambling around for the past couple of weeks trying to work
deals to grab an MD, while keeping track almost daily of the number of
available units left in the original MachineFriend stockpile of 100.

Today I checked the available stock (20 now left), only to find an
additional message: "The 100 Machinedrum friend offer is now over. The
SPS-1 is available for public order at the main Machinedrum website."

Nertz! Now I guess I'll just have to wait for one to come up on the used
market... :-(
