There are quite a few parameters on the 808 kick/snare/hihats/cymbals,
the other ones are fixed. Hmmm... I might have a go at trying to
perfect an 808 kit. No promises though.

True. The drumstation uses samples for the static sounds that cannot
be tweaked, and Analogue Sound Modelling for the other sounds (DSP stuff).
What do we want from the Machinedrum? Do we want the same good old
808/909 sounds (as found in the drumstation) or do we want new unheard
sounds?
The new kick drum machine should be more like a really hard dance
kick, as found in the XBase09 (or 909 if you prefer that). What we are
lacking right now is the snare and the crunchy hihats from the 909.
Some of us wants new unheard sounds, other wants the standard
sounds. My guess is that Elektron will give us both, given that they
have time and resources.
A friend of mine asked me today who I like the Machinedrum.
1. It is fun to work with and inspires me
2. Easily tweakable to get the right sounds
3. Good sound quality
