That is fore sure possible thanks to the midi machines.
I personally use the MD to drive a SidStation and a Juno-106
and it works fine.
I would suggest anyway that you kept in mind that :
- a track used for a midi machine is one track less for the drum parts
(using every part of your Virus leaves you with no outcoming sound
from the MD)
- you stick with the pattern based programming (which is absolutely
fine for me but I am doing very basic things)
One personal thought about keyboard controllers :
unless you are highly nomad with your gear, get some really
nice controller instead of the kind of 2/3 octave plastic things...
You might well find yourself soon thinking "I wish I could do
that", "I wish there were more keys", "What about aftertouch" and so
on. Zillions of knobs are not vital on the controller in your case :
the Virus and the MD are "knobbed to death" and you can use the MD's
knobs to control the old TX7 or AlphaJuno that you might pick someday.
I chose a Roland A-90EX. It is pricey but I am also a classic piano
player. When I move, I use a Korg Prophecy that I happened to have
bought way before I got the Elektrons.
Remember that's only food for thoughts. Thinking is not bad for
health.
