sound environments : part 1

sound environments : part 1

2000-01-18 by andrew sargeant

Hello SIDstation community!

As we're all aware, the SID chip has many quirks and 'bugs' which help give
it a unique sound. They also make it very un-predictable (do you know of any
other synth that never plays a sequence the same??) ..

I do a bit of experimental sound making here and there, producing
sound-scapes and ambient sound.

So i've found a fantastic way of using this 'unwanted' ambience -- using the
noise leaking from the SID chip to make sounds like no other synth (what
other synth leaks ambience? :) ). Paricularly using tables. When the SID is
left (without a noise gate!) to make ambient noise with tables, some amazing
soundscapes can be made.

Chuck it through a nice analogue (or filtered) delay .. and assign some
controllers to things like pitch and the filter. Some truly amazing textures
can be found, and it's the closest thing you'll get to being inside a SID
chip!

Anyhow, i have a streaming (flash4) example on www.noisemusic.org (the
sounds on the front page are all sidstation and effects). So if you have
want to, check it out.

Andrew

Andrew,
How about some Step by step instructions for us dummies?
Thanks.

Thanx Andrew!

I\ufffdll try playing around with it!

I have my Sidstation for about 2-3 Months, and indeed it is sometimes a
little bit difficult to fit the sound into the rest of the mix.
Sometimes the volume seems to be too low, and when you turn it up some
frequencies dominate and kill the rest of the song.
But I think thats a fact of really creating your own and special
presets. I recognized this because I found a "1000$ - tone" I am in love
with
now.

I do little bit more straight and funky techno tunes, and the Station is

a main-part of my small Live-Equipment (MPC 2000+ 2 effects).
I played the SidStation now on about 10 concerts - and there\ufffds one thing

I can tell: If you use it right, and everything is like it should be,
people get
crazy on the sound. You definetly have no other source that is smashing
a PA in such a
special way.

Sorry,
but I had to say this...
Has anyone still interest in my "graphical menue-overview"?

See you
Splank!
