thinking about buying a machinedrum...

2002-05-24 by gilt9190

...and i have a couple of questions for those of you who already have
one! i'm thinking about replacing a 909 with a md for live use.

can you edit patterns while it's playing?
i more or less improv the drum parts so i'd like to leave it on a
single pattern and edit the notes in that pattern, like i do with the
909 now. i usually step edit the notes in and out, so the fact that
the pads are apparantly not well-suited to tapping in things live
doesn't bother me.

related to that: how do the pads feel? clicky? smushy? nice technical
terms there, eh? :)
any other drum machine who's pads you'd compare it to? they look like
they're similar to the pads on an 808 or possibly an electribe, but
looks are frequently decieveing.

last question: how many rack spaces does it take up when racked?
from the dimensions on the website it measures out to 4U, but with the
audio ins/outs on the top i'd have to assume you need to leave at
least 1U empty space above it, right?

thanks a bunch in advance for any advice any of you can offer!!
john.

(subliminal message, give your 909 to me!)

Yup. That's how I program my patterns! The sequencing part is modelled
after the x0x drummachines.

Hmm... more clicky, sort of. :) Once you start using, at least I don't
think of how they feel, I just keep on programming rhythms...

I'll answer what I can:
....and i have a couple of questions for those of you who already have
one! i'm thinking about replacing a 909 with a md for live use.

Yes, either by selecting the relevant machines (sounds) one at a time, or
alternatively in the second record mode, just drop things on the fly.

- Basically the transport controls are the all familiar tape deck style, so
you can hit rec/play together and it'll do the latter, and the pressing of
rec first then play will rock the other method.

i more or less improv the drum parts so i'd like to leave it on a
single pattern and edit the notes in that pattern, like i do with the
909 now. i usually step edit the notes in and out, so the fact that
the pads are apparantly not well-suited to tapping in things live
doesn't bother me.

- grid edit (808 stylee) is one of the options.
Its a very flexible piece of kit.

related to that: how do the pads feel? clicky? smushy? nice technical
terms there, eh? :)
any other drum machine who's pads you'd compare it to? they look like

- They are sprung like the 909. not too much like 808 if I remember
correctly.
The difference being that it will trigger a sound on impact.
The Feel is ok, but I prefer to trigger mine via the pads of an old mpc
(feels more natural).
- No they aren't clicky! - Springy (ha ha!)

last question: how many rack spaces does it take up when racked?
from the dimensions on the website it measures out to 4U, but with the
audio ins/outs on the top i'd have to assume you need to leave at
least 1U empty space above it, right?

- its all dependent on what your leads are like. Mine are heavy duty so 6u
at a squeeze if I did want to deal with placing it within my rack set up.
