SIDstation is very picky about power... the external power supply is
supposed to be 6 volts, which is regulated down to 5 volts for SID chip
use. In order for the voltage regulator to work properly, voltage must
not drop below about 5.75 volts. I've had a hell of a time finding an
appropriate 6 volt power supply here in the US -- I'm in the process of
making my own.

For the future, I think Elektron would be wise to thermally couple the
regulator to the case (aluminum is a great heat conductor) and reccomend
driving the SIDStation with 9v rather than 6v to give more breathing
room.

What power supplies are people in the US using?

Hello Aaron J. Grier,

I live in the states and have been using a Radio Shack power supply 6v -
4.5v (switchable) 550ma. One of those white with blue lettering power
supplies. They have many different flavors. I have been using mine for
several months now.

Well, 5 volts for about everything. But the SID who also needs 12v.

The regulator has a heatconductor added for all SidStations of batch B and
C. Not D, because we found that it was not needed.

If you experience problems with power stability there should not be any
problems running the SidStation on 7 or 7.5v.

...just a note... We've ordered tons of US powersupplies... About half a
year ago! :) These things really takes time.

Daniel,

I remeber when I ordered my Sidstation you emailed me with some info. about
a company here in the US that had some power supplies that would work with
the Sidstation. I called the person and he said that they did have them and
cost $30.00 ( not shure, but close) I think they were in the SouthWest US
(Arizona, Nevada ??). Are they still around? Also, when I got my power
supply from Radio Shack I emailed you with the part #. Do you still have
it? If you want, I can see if I can find out the part#. I have been using
this power supply since I received my SidStation (Sept. 99 ?) with no
problems.

I hope so, we're still refering people to them. Their name is Powerbox.

I do, but it seems like it's no longer valid!

The problem with the 1) Powerbox powersupply is that it is too expensive
and far too heavy. It would cost us to much to buy them and ship them.
2) The Radio Shack one is afaik one which the voltage is user
controllable. We want one that is fixed so the user can not do anything
that can give problems with the SidStation.

But - according to the promises we should have the US standard power
supplies here any day now. Let's say a few week according to my
experience! :)

We already have european and UK standard supplies. Anyone knows about the
strange Australian standard? The voltage is the same, but the plug appears
to be different. Are there more countries with the Australian standard?

I like to get one as a back up, just in case... How much and can I get one
from the manufacturer directly? Now that I recall the Power Box unit was
more like $40.00.

for one reason or another the message i posted at the egroup site didn't make it
to the list? well i just though i'd let everyone know that my "official" power
supply came last week. the difference it makes in the noise floor is enormous. i
should post an example of the gawd awfull amount of noise my old power supply was
contributing to my sid. it's even one of those space saving designs(the new psu),
so it ONLY takes up one slot on a power strip. the connector that plugs into the
sidstation is much larger than my old supposed 2.1mm plug...it works great now,
which is all that matters. thank you Daniel, and Mickey.

Hi,
Please do post a coupla examples. I purchased my power supply from Radio
Shack, and I'm curious to see if the official PSU will make a difference.
My sid makes noise, but it sounds more like the oscillators ringing out than
actual line noise from the output. Maybe the power supply I have is
fine...not sure??

Thanks!

I'd say your PSU is perfectly fine... those DCO noises you have to live
with!

k, am uploading a few files. an mp3 of the sid with my olde radioshack psu [Rdioshk],
and another mp3 of the sid with the new psu(Ofical), also including a text file of the
specifics. be amazed!

I think I'm gonna order the official power supply today!
Mine definitely sounds like the Radio Shack mp3. :)

Hello,

I just want drop my 2 cents in here about power
supplies. I compared the mp3's of the official
supply, and a radioshack supply. My Radioshack
supply definitly sounds much more like the official.
Very little noise at all. just for the record I
bought the $40 3-12v variable, with 1000ma, if
I had a model number I would include that but
I tossed the packaging for this supply months
ago.
