Recently got a SID workstation. I had been warned about the noise, leaking
and high S/N ratio.
Even using all the tips and tricks, compressors, NR, etc, is still is a
noisy machine and which is a great shame.

Will further updates improve the situation so the problem is no longer the
difference between having a curious, novelty synth but a good tool to work
with. Or will it be forever a problem with this chip/machine?

hey, you were warned!! ;)
didn't you believe it?

Use a noise gate. Compression and noise reduction won't really do it. In the
case of compression you'll get MORE noise! .. in the case of noise
reduction, you'll get other types of noise which are usually like noise
underwater or strange submarine sounds. A noise gate is best --- cut the
noise out when it's just the oscillators leaking (a property of the SID
itself!).. i'm sure you'll find the signal loud enough to come through, and
then the gate will cut the ambient noise out..

It's the chip itself, so no i don't think the situation will improve. But i
disagree with you about the novelty thing --> the sid is a unique
synthesizer ... and the synthesis architecture on the sidstation is quite
powerful. I guess your only solution is to find another synth...?

If I'd heard one in a shop I'd never have bought it, but since you can't do
that, I took a chance. Gates aren't much fun on envelopes. SID for sale,
hardly used.

Very correct!!!! It's a matter of setting up your gate well, that's all! Works
like a charm.

Correct.

Apparently you haven't used the SidStation well yet, because otherwise you
probably wouldn't sell it just because of that noise problem. :)))

im a brand new elektron owner and i would just like to say that the MD is fucking beautiful !!!!, pardon the language

the ONLY thing that worries me is the cheapish feel of the 8 parameter adjust knobs, does anyone know if these can become a problem?

Only if you bang them against your desk, they might crack. They are
pretty solid against fingers. I can grip them solidly, you have to
when you push them down, or just slightly without pushing them. It
would be nice to have them knurled for gripping however. Does anyone
notice some knobs aren't perfectly 45 deg. to the face? Seems cheap
for the price, but a great piece of equipment. Anyone ever put on
custom knobs?

I was just wondering about that myself. Just got my MD the other day,
and am thoroughly impressed with it, but thanks to the knobs, it is a
bit too 'tall' to fit where I had planned to put it. Depending on the
length of the knob stems, shorter knobs might address this issue for me.
I gave a couple of the knobs a gentle pull, but they didn't seem
inclined to come off.

Yeah - one of the parameter knobs on my MD rubbed against the face when
I would push down and turn. Just a few days ago, it broke right off.
Crap! I tried crazy gluing it back on, but it broke again a couple of
days later. Seems a little cheap, doesn't it? I don't know if I
should keep crazy gluing it every time it breaks or if I should send it
in for repair and be without it for three weeks. <sigh>
