MD Madness - and string pads?

MD Madness - and string pads?

2002-08-06 by W. Brent Latta

I spent a little over an hour last night working with a kit from scratch
(Init), altering sounds, and creating a short sequence. It was my first
real foray into ³glitch² or ³IDM². It sounds a bit like ³jega², but I think
it is one of the best patterns I¹ve created on the MD. All in less than
one, happy hour.

Now I'm looking to expand on it. Does anyone have any pointers on how to
get some cool analog-ish string pads out of the MD?

Thanks!

Buy a Virus and trigger it from the MD! ;P (as I've been for the past 2
nights instead of sleeping...) I'm starting to feel like I could put
together a solid live set with just these two boxes... This is really
exciting.

Other comments and observations on the new MD (mostly frivolous):

-The buttons feel a little chincy (=cheep/fragile)
-It could be thinner. Feels kind of bulky and makes me want to rackmount it,
rather than carry it in my messenger bag with a car adapter [Road trip beat
boxing!]
-Along those lines, some nice bar LEDs would suit it nicely...

more seriously:

-No storage for single machine sound patches [or management thereof] is a
bit of a bummer
-Add to the wish list: a Grid Display on the lcd of multiple tracks (perhaps
scrollable)
-and perhaps a piano roll for the Midi Machines? This would totally kick
ass.

But of course it already does! I'm really loving working on this box.

Are you really doing this? How does your car adaptor thing work? What is it?
Just a wall socket adaptor you plug the MD power supply into?

My wish list has had only one item on it for months:
- show which patterns in a bank are non-blank using the [DRUM] LED's when
the bank's key (A-H) is held down.

For instance, say you have patterns stored in B4,B5, and B15, and the rest of
bank B is blank patterns. I'd really love it if holding down [B] lit up LED 4, 5,
and 15 while keeping the other [DRUM] lights dark, so I would know which
patterns are blank without having to check each one. Is there a feature
request address?

Try the FM sounds, most flexible of the machines. In particular, the
FM hihat. I made a demo using 3-part strings, that I think will be
featured on machinedrum.com very soon. :-)

not sure if you noticed this, but you can copy and paste individual
machines between kits, that helps a bit...
