MD...Soon to buy...a few questions first.

2002-08-06 by misterbrooksy

Hi All-
I am looking into buying a MD very soon, and I have a few questions:

1. How well does the E12 synth work for creating those old school hip-
hop type sounds? Is it possible to give a sound that 8 bit beauty of
yesteryear?

2. Has Elektron weeded out the hardware problems that some people
seem to be suffering? I'd hate to get one and then have to send it
back immediately.

Just a few thoughts before I take the plunge...any info is definately
appreciated!

Thanks,
Brooks

very, very well...it is also good for
some new-school glitch. ;)

no, because while the MD has SRR, it does
not have BDR. that said, you can still make
all manner of crusty timbres.

I cannot answer other than to say that my MD
has been sweet from day 1 with no problems,
and that feedback from the list and other
sources has indicated similar experiences.
For those couple of people I spoke to who
did have to return their MD, they got their
unit back very quickly (2 days) and all was
well.

cheers,

The e12 is very much a direct copy of the preset sounds that came with the
EMU SP12.
The major difference being that you tweek the hell out of them and so go far
beyond the 'Hip Hop'feel you're refering to. - Although I must say, If you
don't tweek, then you will sound blatantly 80s. If you want very basic drum
machine flavour the Init kit is also very DR55 sounding so more 80's magic
there too.

Just buy one - You won't regret it!

Others may agree with this, you buy the MD for a specific purpose or
requirement, but always end up going that significant step further. As far
as it goes, the MD is the new standard in electronic percussion

My MD has NEVER misbehaved (touch wood).

I find the E12 bank to be very useful for
"bringing a kit back down to earth."

like say, you make some ridiculous bass sound,
with some crazed high-hat, and wild tom sounds....
if you play it for someone they'll think it's
overall *too* crazy (what do they know...). So
what to do, is insert a nice, -normal- E12 snare
sound to balance.

The editing interface is hands down the best ever. very
smooth-flowing. Some products (like the ASR-X) try to
advertise as "you'll work best when you have a good interface."
However, the the MD's case, it's more than just wishful
thinking.
