909 hats

909 hats

2002-12-19 by Bastiaan van de Werk

I think the original samples are only 16 or 32 kb (those used in the
909)...personally I think elektron should just give us the 909 hat in the
next update...with a few EXTRA parameters (not just pitch and decay, but
some sort of sizzling exciter, grunge, noise, attack etc.)

Hey, why don't we start some sort of whishlist that we can send elektron?
I'm sure this company (which is known for its great customer care) would be
more than interested to see what they can do to improve the MD.

Anyone from Elektron on this board btw?

vriendelijke groet,

Sounds like you want a sampler. :)

Tonight I was running the MD and a 909 synced together. I compared the
sounds. The MD sounds crisp and clear, the 909 has a much more muffled
sound. Next time I'll add some EQ to the 909 to make it brighten
up. Those hihats are nice, but they are just samples, and can be found
in every sample library on earth...

The MD is for me a new instrument with new sonical capabilities, not
something made to emulate the sounds from old drummachines (Despite
the E12 kit...). That said, most of the time I have a hard time
finding suitable hihats.

I don't remember if support@... is the right address to send
suggestions to, but it won't hurt at least. :)

909 hats

Ive spoken to elektron in past about the possibility of uploading some
short samples to the memory. It already has audio inputs, all it needed
would be some free ram, and the possibility to send the sounds through
sysex. This would be a good way to save them on computer. But they declined
it, saying that the MD wasnt a sampler, and I can understand that. But a
909 hats sample is becoming really necessary. I do completly experimental
sound, but theres nothing like those hats to put your head spinning. Im
all forward to experimenting and getting your own original sounds, but when
those hats come in, they really rock the floor. And its true. somtimes, the
whole groove is geate, but when yu pul in the hats, something just dont cut
it and make it sound digital, and toyish. Im improving my hats messing with
dist, srr, and filters and stuff, but theres no way to get that metalic
grungyness that is melodic in all frequencies that matter. Those hats are
something...
Another thing Id like to see would be a reversed cymbal sample, or a
parameter that would let you reverse the sample youre using (E12) . Itd be
sweet, and vcery usefull at the loops breakpoint.
Even though Mds is a masterpiece. Im really looking forward to elektrons
new piece....
Whens NAMM btw?

That's something I'd really like!

I don't care about the 909 samples.
I love 909 cymbals, but there are samplers for that, and I still like
what I'm able to create on the MD.

reverse-playback of samples, add that to the wishlist!

bye

I disagree. You can get AWSOME, grungy, ear peeling
and distorted hi hats with the MD. Specially when you
apply compression.
In fact, I disagree all over. You can get 909 type HHs
and cymbals if you spend enough time fucking around
the hi hats in the Machine drum. They might not sound
EXACTLY like a 909, but you CAN get a sort of
processed 909 hi hat, which for me is even better.

Why don't you upload your kit with your awesome grungy hats
just to see how grungy the MD can get?

I'm sorry I cannot right now give you guys a couple of
kits (I've nothing really against it, I'm just
rebuilding my computer and only have my computer at
work and my wife's at home- and she has prohibited me
from putting anything on it). I'm on my way out of
town right now, but when I get back I'll try to load
some mp3s.
