that's weird. I don't seem to get that view to work on my machine
correctly. anyway, seems kool.

Actually, if you look really closely in the upper right hand photo you can
make out the bottoms of the letters that appear to read: MONOMACHINE

Hmm...could it be a really kick ass analog(or ???) MonoSynth with a step
sequencer on board?

One of the pics seems to imply they actually used the engine of the MD and
stuffed it into a keyboard. Probably adding some new synthesis algorithm...

[elektron] Re: Friend update!

2003-02-07 by Ben <bdagnon@hotmail.com>

This is exciting. I hope that there are some analog components in
there with the DSP engines, hidden under the "multiple synthesis"
title. I could see them relying on their great interface/controller
aspect to make DSP reliance acceptable, as they did very successfully
in the MD, but I've been waiting for them to make a unique version of
an analog synth or an analog/digital hybrid (SID not included). It
looks sort of like an old Akai keyboard (AX-73, VX-600) take on an
analog keyboard controller, like the Analogue Systems French
Connection. Even without VCOs I'll probably buy one on preorder
because they'll have done a good job with the interface/controller
aspect, it's just that DSP is so replaceable whereas the Synthi A I've
been saving up for is something unique as a sound source, not
replaceable by any algorithm set because it relies on physical design
and imperfections. Since Elektron warned about cost in the release -
which is going out to most of the people who've ponied up for an MD -
and it's from Elektron I think this will have features like nothing
else. I'm glad and hope its features will be impressive enough to put
its price up to the level of the Minimoog Voyager. Is anyone going to
be at Musikmesse to take pics and make a review? One month, one month,
one more month...

I think it is time to save some money until Q3,
since the MD and the SID i believe MM is a MUST-HAVE!
So they have to prepare a stop of sending out midinotes for the sync
of MD>MM.
How much will it cost? Anyway, if possible i want to get one of the
first 100!

What does the tool-box bit mean? Does that mean there will be building blocks for users to put together al a Modular?
Plus they "FX" seems to feature promiently does this mean it will have Stereo Inputs?

It may have a fancy algorithmic sequencer/arpegiator like the korg karma..
respekt to them if it does, i'm building a software one and its bloody hard.

in that upper right hand photo, I see:

SELF TEST
780ST TEST <-- what is 780ST?
  DRAM...OK
E?GAAH...OK <-- what is E?GAAH?
 DSP TEST
  DSP2...OK
  DSP1...OK
FUNCTION TEST

I looked on the web for 780ST, but only saw a toner cartridge
for a laser printer by that name :)

What is oo-gah?

Whatever it is, they sure are right about it being heavy if its case is made from
the same materials as the Machinedrum (not to mention the odd dimensions.).
I'd guess that if the initial price is high, a good amount of it factors into
worldwide air shipping costs.

It would be nice if they made a keyboardless version for those of us without
room/need for another keyboard controller. After all, those pics reveal that the
machinedrum-sized interface module is in fact a separate module. I guess
we'll have to wait and see exactly what the thing can do before deeming a
module version feasible.

The page seems to stress the construction of effects, so I'll be very happy if the
thing ends up having more than 2 inputs. I think I counted 10 jacks on the lab
page... right on. Too bad I probably won't be able to afford one (or one of the
last sidstations) until its Q3 regular-price release. Greybox takes precendence
(greybox.norfair.org.) I'm certainly interested, though.

Buy some industrial-strength game music and help some artists afford some
good instruments. www.mile329.org.

³However, perfection does not come cheap.²

If it is true that it will be mono something and the price will be
³perfection does not come cheap².
Does that mean that it will be more expensive than MD?
2000e? Huh?

I've only found an old Dec Vax computer with a 780 cpu.

And what is the game on the lower-right corner???

Hmmm...

Should this really read, "The first 100 units will be reserved for
our friends and BETA released in June this year at a special
price."?
Having looked back at the long list of OS updates for the MD - and
knowing that hardware problems ala endless rotary knob issues crop up
in early models, I may have to wait. I'd rather not have to send the
bugger back to Sweden, especially if it is as heavy as it seems it
may be. Of course, if it is perfect from the get-go...?

Hmm... I want a slot on the new machine where I can put the MD
safely. Otherwise it might fall off if you use both machines in a live
situation.

I do hope they have been inspired by the weird and beautiful sounds
that people have been creating on the MD, and then taken it further. I
recreated the sound from GSM roaming interference in speaker and such
yesterday. Definitely a surprise to me when that sound came out of the
little silver box!

I really hope not. I already have a MD, so I'd like
something totally different in terms of sounds, but I
certainly would not mind the same operating system and
sequencer in a keyboard (although polyphonic, PLEASE
god). You know, I also hope it's not THAT expensive,'
cause I really need a keyboard. I've been seriously
thinking about a Creamware Noah, but was waiting to
see if the new Elektron machine was a keyboard. My
prayers have been answered.

I only said it looked like a MD stuffed over there. Like you said, they
could take the MD plateform (the basic UI, the DSP's, the knobs, the
parameters locks) and program a totally different sound set in there.
Clearly, the fact that it does not competition to the MD and the description
of it makes this product something completely different.

fwiw, Elektron stuff is expensive in general, but their high
level of service is worth it. Specifically, they've paid
for the shipping both ways on the warranty repairs done to my "first 100"
MD. As well as the shipping on the warranty repairs of my first 100
SIDsta. At the same time as the fixing of those warranty repairs,
they upgraded them to include hardware changes that enhanced
the quality. Specifically, upgraded the MD knobs and audio inputs
and in the case of the SIDsta, added the zener diodes to reduce
static sensitivity.

Also, many of the initial, long list of OS updates were influenced
by users. Meaning, if it was worth it to you to make do with
incomplete software, you have a shot of directly influencing
the instrument. For instance, Splank Mute mode.

When we're talking Beta here, we're not talking Microshit beta.

I think an analogy to Mercedes, one of the most expensive and
longest-lasting consumer vehicle brands, would be more apt.
