How do I get time signatures like 12/8 on the machinedrum?

How do I get time signatures like 12/8 on the machinedrum?

2003-02-20 by frustated2000 <conapt@philipkdick.com>

Hi, I'm new to this list. I've recently bought a machinedrum but
wondered how I could achieve dotted notes and triplets as well as
straight notes so I can work with 6/8, 12/8 time signatures. I've
asked Elecktron support but they have yet to get back to me. In the
scale setup you can only seem to select 16th or 32nd notes. In the
manual I can't find any mention of how to set dotted notes or
triplets and I can't believe the sequencer would be that limited.

In song mode, you can choose how many steps of the pattern you want to
play.
That way is possible to use those time signatures.

Thankyou for your reply.

My question had to do with selecting note resolution rather than step
length. I know that in the scale menu I can select from between 2-32
steps per pattern. Thus, bu selecting 12 I can achieve a 12/4 time
signature. But how can I program a pattern in 12/8??? In other words,
how can I use dotted notes, like dotted 16ths and so on? I have yet
to hear from Elektron on whether or not dotted notes are even
possible!

I hope someone can help here......

Thanks in advance

I'll take a stab at this.

MD's Scale setup can give a time "signature" of 12/16. Turn the
tempo down from 120 to 60, and there you have it. 12 beats per
measure, every 1/8 note is a "beat", i.e. 12/8. Of course, you're
left with half note resolution, which isn't all that nice.

A better way to do this is to leave the tempo set at for example 120,
and choose 24/32 in the scale setup. You get the same end result,
but with higher resolution (quarter note) between beats.

But the problem is: I can't sync the MD to other drum machines and
sequencers using 12th or 24th note clock time. Sure, I could sequence
everything from the MD itself, but the MD's sequencer is very basic
and doesn't support polyrhythms.
