MD bassdrum distorts Yamaha EMX5000 mixer input

MD bassdrum distorts Yamaha EMX5000 mixer input

2003-05-10 by synthyscott

Hi,

I've been using my MD with a Mackie for a long time with no issues. But recently I got a Yamaha EMX5000-20 mixer, and have the MD connected to that. The problem I'm having is that with any of my MD's bassdrums distort the EMX's input channel, no matter how low I set the bassdrums level, and no matter what the gain setting of the EMX's input is set at. Also, I have tried turning the 26dB pad on, and while it helps, it does not eliminate the distortion. Even if I have MD's level at a minimum, and use the EMX's channel and EQ to boost the signal, I still get a periodic distortion at the beginning of each bassdrum note.

Have any of you had this problem with the MD and the Yamaha EMX mixers or any other mixers for that matter? If so, how did you fix it?

Thanks,

Scott

BTW... I do not have a Yahoo account, so I will not see your response unless you email me directly.

nevermind, I figured out the problem. the EMX mono channels are rated to receive balanced signals on xlr or 1/4", so applying a hot (MD bassdrum) unbalanced signal to those mono inputs overdrives the input amplifier immediately, and there is no way around it... other than to use a 1/4" unbalanced -> (2) 1/4" unbalanced Y-cable, and just use one of the Y'd cables to drive the mixer input, and keep the (TRX) bassdrum instrument volume at a maximum of 75. that combination of adjustments yields a satisfactory bassdrum at the EMX's mono input amp, then you can even gain it up a bit to restore some of that oomph lost in the Y-cable. shitty solution, and a slightly shitty designed mixer that required it.
