SIDSTATION - waste of money

SIDSTATION - waste of money

2003-05-01 by Col Dee

I got my SidStation about a week ago, and have spent a lot of time
trying to get an interesting sound out of it.

I can't believe the silly design faults they've made. For instance,
why not have a bigger screen so that you don't have to confusingly
navigate through different "pages"? And why not have a few more knobs
so you don't have to select a parameter before you can alter it?

Simplicity is great, but the design layout of the SidStation is so
simple that operating it, working with it, is made complicated.

As I said before, I've got an Ensoniq Fizmo, and I honestly can't
find a sound yet on the SidStation that I couldn't have done a lot
quicker and better on the Fizmo.

It just seems to be an awkward little box.

Please explain to me that I've got it very wrong.

Col.

Ok, more knobs and a bigger lcd would make it easier to program, but
the Sid would also cost more.

I think that the Sid is easier to program than a microQ, which has a
similar interface.
But, sure, the MD is a lot easier than both!

Well, send it back and stay with the Fizmo.

I have never tried a Fizmo, but could it be that you just don't like
the Sid sound?
I love it and i don't think that it can be easily reproduced with other
synths... may be the Fizmo can?

Your bigger screen and additional pots and switches would cost a LOT of
money :-/

I can't speak on the other issues being not a SID fan.

i've been meaning to ask this for a while:

can you make an interface using midi in C74's Max/MSP that you can use to control the Sid? i know there's an environment for Logic that someone made in the downloads area, but i don't use Logic. and i have been meaning to get into Max/MSP for a while and something like this would make it all the more appealing, especially since i don't really like using the Sid's interface much either.

I think many people would wish to have so much money
to spend on gear without looking at what it is first.

The Sidstation is a special tool that is not good for everybody,
and not for every production.

But I am shure you won\ufffdt get that roughness and wildness from any other
gear.

Hi!

When I was forced to review the SidStation for an spanish magazine,
what I did was to list all the shortcomings, all the bugs, all the
wrongs in the little machine, etc. I ended saying "I love it and it's
the only synth I'm not trading". Some people keep wondering.

It's all about rawness.

Adieu!

Re: [elektron] Re: SIDSTATION - waste of money

2003-05-02 by Hi There

I have sold it!!

No nostalgia, no regret, out with the crap! It's annoying for editing and the sound does not fit my music many times.....

There are RAW sounds in it, OK.

You can get some very cool bleepy sounds pured out of it, but I have enough alternitives.

I've found that I can not use it very often, I look at an instrument as a tool to create my ideas the best way. It has a caracteristique sound wich is unique! But doesn't mean it is super musical and have a BIG "pallette" of sounds.(I think that's why it bores me the most). The very first time I worked with it I was amazed, really. But soon enough I realised that it's not for me to stick with it and to create new sounds. If you have heard all the sounddesigner patches, than you will here what I am talking about. They are good, but very often it sounds the same with a little difference ;o))

I think it can be a tool for some electro, some trance, and weirdo music. There is a HIT made with it, ZOMBIE NATION. And thats cool. But I think it is also a overHYPEd box, and that it's also too expensive. They now even put some extra CASH on it because they are selling the last 100 units, SHAME SHAME....(900 EURO ????)

Not for me, bought it 2nd hand for 400 euro shiny new, sold it for 400 euro same condition.

Have fun with it if U like the sound. It was a pleasure to have it a while under my roof, but that was it.

PEACE!

If you can't find a place for that incredible digital bass
you can get from the SidStation, then it's a good
think your sold it, let others use it.

I don't even own a SidSation, but a friend
of mine does. And although it has a very specific
limited range of sounds , those sounds IMO are
absolutly amazing and you can only find them
in this bizarre synth.

Cheers,

Simon

DIGITAL BASS?? and all other sounds can't find on other machines like a SID ??? (I must admit there are a few specific, but that's the point in this storey, "can u use them in your type of music"??)But on the other hand,Don't let me laugh!I know one, which is WAY better on this. pchieuw.(and don't tell wichone it is, but it's a "rare" synth, released in 1996 by a major synthdeveloper,a "the most dangerous 4 your speakers synth"..) (tell me a secret, open up my......)la la la lalaa.....

You dont get the point.
First of all who wants to waste his time to sample and edit all those obsolete
drumsounds from old drummachines especially when they come from a low budget
sampling CD?
MD allows me to tweak the sounds and really make them my own and with the
possibility to record all parameterchanges for every single step and drum its all about
making unique sounding grooves.
Pricewise it sure cant compete with stuff that you can find for free on the internet but
that means that my beats will not sound like anybody elses.

I certainly wouldnt buy the MD because of its internal patterns as i find them pretty
cheesy but its so easy and inspiring to make your own.

You know what, Ive got a really good CD collection at home and so I seriously
consider to sell all my too expensive music making gear, can't be bothered

I'll just put in a cd and ready is da music - smart as me, ay!

Why are we trying to convince someone who thinks
samples from the net are as good as the MD ?
He didnt find a place for the sidStation in his music,
he sold it, let's move on.

That's OK than!I need sounds that I selectively can choose out to compose something new and I think that a Groovebox or MD can give something extra, thats right.(or a Sequencing unit)But as an example, building a "chique" DANCE kick without a decent sampler I gues I couldn't make it the best I want it.But keep on finding new things and explore the unknown out of all your boxes and machines u got there is the key! They suprise me every time, over and over again. Less is more, Peace!

machinedrum. I like using my own sounds now.

Some people pay thousands of dollars for a costume of Elvis Presley,
and that piece of cotton is worth every penny for them
because it makes them feel soooo good.

And noone can tell them they spent too much money on it,
because they KNOW that it is worth it for them.

For others it might be a piece of cotton,
for them it is a fulfillment.

I agree that the Sid has some quirks. But ultimately, it's about the
sound, right? You don't appear to be too fond of the sound, so I
don't blame you for not enjoying the Sid very much. But most Sid
owners will agree that they can quickly get over the Sid's quirks, due
to their love of its sound.

As far as the knobs: I felt the same way at first. And I was
considering purchasing/making a dedicated MIDI controller for the Sid.
But in actual use (i.e. live playing), I usually only want to modify
a couple of parameters anyway. So it would be overkill to have a ton
more buttons (but 8 programmable front-panel buttons would have been
pretty much perfect). And if I have more than four parameters that I
do want to change during a song, I can just assign the extra ones to
my MD (which I'm using to sequence the Sid) and change them from there.

As far as the display: it would be nicer to have a larger display,
something about the size of the MD display. But I can live with it
very happily as is. :-)

Joe.

im happy with the design :) its very small ultralight and portable.
four smooth ceramic pots are all i would want forplaying live, tho
when in my studio a dedicated midi controller really opens up the
sid. i bought a second hand kenton control freak for $200 us. great!
mostly use it for the sid only. i still use the sids pots tho, cos
there smoooth like velvets!
its ok with the small screen too. it makes you focus on what your
doing and think more about synthesis.
plus its easy to navigate anyway
