I bet the sid is emulated...
Monomachine should only have dsp, just like the Machinedrum.

Anyway, it looks awesome!

I dunno about emulated SID... :/
If it had emulated SID with an optional socket for SID, that would be
ideal. Emulated SIDs tend to be kind of sterile.

Maybe the Monomachine is why the supply ran out :) They could do it
like the Hardsid guys and let people add their own sid chips.

If you browse on the site selling obsolete chips, the supply is sparse,
really. Same for the TI SN76977.

If they had in mind of an empty socket for it they would have advertised
for. But it's rather unlikely there is one, too much bother for an
hypothetic chip.

And they would have not cancelled the SIDstations if chips were available,
they are not the only ones lurking for the SIDs and it would have been known
fast.

So, I bet it's a physical model or waveforms samples capitalizing on the
know-how of the MD

I think there's no way the would try to complexify the hardware by adding a
sid interface. This baby looks already very ambitious for not trying to make
it more difficult. Plus, most of their hard core fan do already own one...
they probably want to keep the sid spirit alive by cramming some emulation
in it. Maybe take the advantage of having DSP horsepower to get non
monophonic sounds. To me it is going to be a hard to sell product. Very
specific once again. I'm also surprised people commit to buy one without
even having hear one single sound or known anything about the way it
works... must be an elektron spell somewhere...(oops... to much warcraft
lately ;)

It's no spell! Not for me...

It's trust for me. I really do trust Elektron -- not as a company, but
as the people that are there. Everything I've ever seen about Elektron
shows a group of true enthusiasts, people who love their craft and
really participate in the joys of their tools.

When I first used the Machinedrum, the first thing that came to my mind
(aside from 'oh jeeze, i'm about to lose a couple months of
productivity messing with this') was 'I wish there was a keyboard synth
with this sort of interface'. Here it is! I'm into the Monomachine
even if just as a sequencer for other gear!

My first Elektron purchase was the MD. I decided based end-user
comments (reviews in publications are nice too but as we all know...).
I had no practical way to audition one. So I ordered after reading
comments like the ones in this group. Sure there were surprises when it
finally arrived, but by far most were of the "wow its better than I
thought!" variety.

Would/will I buy something like the Mono sight unseen and sound
unheard? That's a good question if it refers to being one of the first
100. In Elektron's favor they seem to not only be very bright
developers but they also have their own unique sense of what a musical
instrument should be. The MD shows they could take a mature idea and do
something unique and musically wonderful with it. The Mono is really
them doing something new with the age-old analog sequencer/analog
monosynth combination. My guess is that they have not forgotten what
makes an instrument musical :-)

So for me its not inconceivable. Sure I'd rather go see it in a local
shop, but then again if I did it would probably not be what it is
(compromised for a larger audience of users). I guess I have a short
time to decide.

Well, Elektron has a great track record... even the promise of what it
can do is exciting..

Obviously, we all want to HEAR the thing, but knowing you want to buy
one doesn't make you some kind of clyde.

Also, we do know how it works, judging by the interface, so thats an
even better reason to want to buy one.

I bet my left jewel that the voice synth becomes as recognizable and as

no shit. damn you, Elektron! why do you have to make such great instruments?

seriously though, all you soon-to-be-MM-purchasers better create some
great tracks and post links to them frequently; that will tide me over
until either they release a module version or I bite the bullet and get
this one.

Joe.

p.s. and although those demos sound great, I wonder if they're like the
original MD demos are: not representative AT ALL of the machine's true
potential; and if so, that's pretty damn crazy (because those demos are
very sweet!)

Just remember Elektron makes *instruments* not synthesizers or sound

this.

Although, anyone can be an elektron friend so its not like it's a super
secret club. Anything you put up online will spread like wildfire so I'm
sure elektron expects it to wind up getting out. They just don't want to be
judged on these sounds alone.

Re: [elektron] MONOMACHINE SITE UPDATED!

2003-09-08 by Corey Appleby

Heh. Didn't that happen with the MD release as well?

As far as how the MM looks, I think I'll have to hold out until they
release a module version. I just don't have the space for another
keyboard, plus I prefer to tweak with my right hand and play with my
left. Even at the reduced Elektron Friend price I just can't afford
it ATM anyway (saving for a house.)

Easy to say.
First: i trust in elektron.
second: machine drum was and is one the best developments in the last
years. i make use of it's sequencer a lot, also for external gear. So
Monomachine will be a bit better in this.
The Sounds i get out of the MachineDrum-Machines are fantastic.
Third: most of the other new gear is boring (uuuooaahhh another VA)
Four:
a SID, a MACHINEDRUM and a MONOMACHINE belong together.

See, so easy,
Stefan

Allready own Nord Modular Rack extended (Version 1) and keep it.
Except Midi-Out of G2 there is nothing that makes me selling NM1 and
spending 1000 Euros more for G2.
Creamware Noah, that is something..., this piece sounds hot!
Moog Voayager, now we are talking, also something special.
Evolver, i want to have three or four of them...
Yes thats all fine stuff, but except of the eVolVer this gear is not
producing so much "never heard befor"-sounds (but i am owning all them
;-))

Speaking of sequencer, I wondered how the seq will work. Obvioulsy for
straight drum-based stuff using 64th is more than fine but as a general
purpose sequencer (which i don't know if it is the position of th MM's one)
it is a bit rigid. Even in the MD I sometimes wished I could displace notes
a few ticks before or after the beat. The mono looking like a 'performance'
instrument, it could be a nice centerpiece with a full fledge sequencer...

Well, here's a photo taken in my basement during a 10-day electronic
music festival I hosted in August...

So, my big question is...

Will we be able to pass SID patches back and forth between it's SID machine
and the actual SIDstation? That would solve my fear of taking the SID out
on the road. Could just use the SID when I'm recording, and could use the
SID patch on the Monomachine live. That way, I wouldn't have to worry
about destroying my baby when I couldn't get it replaced.

nice idea, but I don't think that it can be done easily due to extreme
differences between the mono and the sid.
The Monomachine is not a simple emulation of the Sid (like fm7 is for
the dx7).
But may be the guys at elektron could give us a sort of
patch-converter ?

No. Although the Monomachine offers the sound of one SID oscillator
through the SID 6581 machine, the rest of the structure is totally
different. The Monomachine and the SidStation are two totally different
machines, even though some part of their sound and inspiration come from
the same source.

Okay. I guess I can live with that. I guess... But I still want to keep
my baby Sid from harms way at gigs. *sighs*
