Dont know if this helps, but a friend of mine's Akai MPC 60 was doing the
same thing to his Microwave 1, think it was something to do with a sys ex

aha! the plot thickens. You should be able to monitor midi messages with a
sequencer?
(anyone use anything to do this?). I haven't had any problems with my
sidstation, but i have it it reset once or twice when using the mod wheel on
my keyboard with certain controller numbers (by default it's fine).

Ok, this is the result of a 16 step sequence containing one note. For some
reason, the SQ16 sends note offs for notes that haven't even triggered (I
think that these are notes in the sequence that I've muted). If I mute all
the notes in the track, the SidStation doesn't reset. If there are any
note ons, then it resets.

When I say reset - sometimes it's as if the SidStation has turned off then
on again (a full reset), and sometimes the screen goes blank, and I have to
reset it myself. And, the MIDI light stays on (as if it was jammed).

It's also sending SPP. I'd say that this might be the problem, but the
SidStation resets before the end of the sequence (where the SPP appears)
... it does not play any notes.

Have a look:

TIMESTAMP PORT STATUS DATA1 DATA2 CHAN NOTE EVENT
 0003472E 2 9D 00 00 14 C 0 Note Off

 0003476D 2 8D 00 00 14 C 0 Note Off
 0003476E 2 8D 1C 64 14 E 1 Note Off

 00034F2B 2 82 2C 51 3 G#2 Note Off

(also weird that it's sending note offs for channels 15 and 3, because
those channels are muted on the sequencer)

That shouldn't be any problems for the SidStation. It also shouldn't be a
problem with the Song position pointer from the information I've got here,
as it is not specific for any channel - and muting the SidStation-channel
makes it stop resetting.

Now, could you try sending the data you received from the SQ16 from the
computer to the SidStation? This way we'll see if it's an electrical
adaption problem or a problem with the actual data sent.

So, I plugged the SQ16 into the computer's MIDI IN, and the SidStation into
the computer's MIDI OUT. I loaded up MIDIOX. From what I understand,
MIDIOX just monitors what's on the MIDI line, and echos an exact copy back
out. Guess what - the SidStation works fine!

So ... I figure that the SQ16 must be outputting a bad voltage or
something, which is causing the SidStation to reset. Later this week, I'm
going back to the dealer where I bought the SQ16 to see if it was just one
bad model ... hopefully his others won't do the same. I'm going to test it
out in the store.

In case it doesn't work out, does anyone know a nice 16 step sequencer that
isn't too expensive?

And you're sure that MIDI-OX echoes to the MIDI OUT? Does this mean that
you can control the SidStation with the SQ-16 if you put the PC in
between?

What you could do also is to put some other unit in between the SQ-16 and
the SidStation, and put the SidStation in the MIDI-THRU. This could solve
the problem if it is about electric levels.

Well, that's how it was working. SQ16 to PC, PC to SidStation. The
only thing that was in between the two was the PC running MIDI-OX.

I've tried passing the signal through a couple of MIDI THRU ports,
but it didn't help. So far, the only thing that worked was passing
it through the PC. I think the reason why it worked is because the
PC doesn't echo directly like a THRU port...it reads the data, then
re-sends it out (or is that how a thru port works?).

hmmmmm....

You're probably very right here. It could also be that the PC-MIDI prt
filters illegal messages. Some interfaces do this.

I think that's it. I found a solution that works really well - I
bought myself a 2x2 MIDI Merge. I just put it in between the SQ16
and the SidStation, and everything works 100%! It's something that I
have a use for anyways, so it wasn't a waste of money or anything...
