I think it's better to keep only one group for all elektron related

Re: [elektron] New Elektron Groups

2003-12-04 by Col Dee

To be honest I do find it a bit annoying that people so rarely talk
about the SidStation. It is a "dead product" only in that it is not
being sold "first-hand" anymore. I only got mine a few months ago,
bought second-hand, and I'm very new to its sound and operation, and
I'm thrilled by it.

Alas, I can hardly share that joy because all anyone ever talks about
here is the Monomachine. And up until about two months ago, all
anyone ever spoke about was the Machinedrum.

Now, I'm sure these are both fantastic products in their own right,
but this tendency to immediately drop one item of conversation when
Elektron releases a new product ("the next big thing") is a bit
worrying. I'm sorry if that offends anyone but it's how it looks from
the point-of-view of someone who owns a SidStation and isn't
particularly interested in reading about the Machinedrum.

We only ever seem to hear about the SidStation when somebody's SID
chip has burned out and needs replacing. And I don't know about
anyone else but I'm bored hearing nothing but technical reports of
how the MD works. Nobody ever talks about "that magic MD sound"
or "the thrill of working with it" or anything personal or creative.
It seems as if the only people buying Elektron gear are oddball
technicians who want to crack the synthesis architecture before
anyone else and aren't interested in actually making music or
discussing the possibilities of the MnM's sound and putting up mp3s
of their work.

Of course there is no obligation to read posts about the MD and MnM,
but then there's hardly any obligation to come to this group at all
since about 99% of the threads concern those two instruments, and on
a cold technical level at that.

For all that, I'm not sure about replacing the group with dedicated
SID, MnM and MD lists. I think it could only be done effectively with
an actual FORUM at elektron.se. Otherwise it'd just be three
miscellaneous groups scattered around Yahoo and I don't think the
users of the various machines would talk much to each other.

I don't understand why Elektron haven't set up their own forum built
into their website.

have you been watching the group at all when you say this? because I've
only seen one thread relating to technicalities of synthesis (the one
regarding the MnM's waveforms) for the Elektron machines. the
"technical" questions that usually come up for the MnM and the MD are
just operational questions ("how do I do this?" questions).

and people post links to their MnM work all the time. check the
archives.

I'm sure you'll hear form the SID user. They sure CAN talk :)
I've seen it.

On mailing list it's the novelty effect, as a lot of memebers are
Elektron addicts the die hards with SID, MD and MnM are all on the MnM
as it's the next big thing. It'll go more equally distributed after the
beta and the release.

You don't really know the deepness of GAS inflicted people (Gear
Addiction Syndrom)

If you wait til other talk about something that interest you, you may
end up waiting a long time. :)
Remember the list is around for some time now and as I'm only on it
from the beginning of this year, I know I've lost a lot of interesting
talks.

But if I have a question or have metaphysical need to be verbose about
the beauty of the MD, I help myself and tell the list.

Just DO it ;)

1- GAS
2- not every one feels the same upon talking about the actual music
they do. Myself I'm very secretive, because I'm very shy (even if it
doesn't show up easily)
3- Synth freaks are technical freaks. And this list is rather cool on
that, it could be much worse :)

If you want to talk about the SID, why don't you do it?
I won't as I'm not fond of it, but I will find perfectly normal people
talk about it :)

As I said previously to separate at least MD and MnM users would be
stupid, as both machine have a lot in common.
And a group with not a lot activity for SID would be a bore, if not
dead. Remember Elektorn users are a very small % of people buying gear,
better to keep hot together. especially in near winter as we are ;)

Because PHP forums are rather new (well…) and it means more work for
them as it won't be a small forum. You have to check every day,
moderate if need be etc. Also you need to think of the use. Until much
more advanced features are needed, the form and possibilities of the
yahoo group is enough. The only talk there has been was on the eventual
move to a less prone to spam system. That's all.

Since people are mainly complaining about that noone talks about the
Sidstation instead of talking about the Sidstation. I sold my Sidstation,
hence I won't talk about it.

Nowe you have your chance, start talking SID! 6581! Wavetables,
tips'n'trix, weird filter settings, how to best recreate some of the
famous sounds from C64 song and so on. Get on it! Complaing doesn't solve
the problem.

Right. If there's no Sid discussion, it's because the people who have
things to discuss aren't saying anything, not because there are other
things to talk about.

I have a Sidstation, but I can't think of anything to say about it. It's
silver, it's really light, it makes a lot of noise. I love it! But I'm not a very
good conversation starter.

p.s. Am I the only one with a post-it note permanently stuck to their
sidstation with a diagram of keypad->table edit commands?

lol! I don't know it well enough yet even to write such a post-it
note! Generally I don't musically programme the SidStation, I just
coax it into emitting ridiculous noises and then sample them into
Fruityloops.

If I had my own website the mp3s of it would be up there. Apologies.

You could use soundclick.com or ripway.com to store and share your
files for free.
