same ol sysex problems on the monomachine

same ol sysex problems on the monomachine

2003-12-14 by zebraoner

ok

ive been trying to upgrade to os .94 from .93 since i got this puppy,
i couldn't do it though.

i had no problems going to .93 right out of the box.
but .94 was another story. i made a post regarding that ish. someone
said to change the settings in midiox (size and num), which i did and
that never worked. so after a while i just didn't even bother trying
to upgrade anymore. now i have been trying to upgrade to .95 for like
the past hour and half while i was watching charlie and the chocolate
factory, but it never worked. i tried sooooooo many times and soooo
many soft resets i cant even remember. its just weird. i mean why
would i be able to go to .93 first try, with out even trying, and
then not even be able to upgrade any higher than that? what the deal
yo?

any suggestions?
gracias,
ZEBRA

If you write down exaclty what you do, what kind of OS, midi card,
patchbay and what you see when things go wrong maybe someone can
help you. For me the buffer settings did the trick. Just a
simple "it doesn't work for me" doesn't give me (and others) idea's
of what can be wrong.

Ronald.

this is the 2nd time i had to type all this soooo...

i have windowsxp os (i hope thats what os you mean), a MOTU fastlane-
usb midi interface. i make sure the midi out on the interface goes to
the midi in on the monomachine. I load the .95 sysex file in either
midiox with both nums @ 512 and both sizes @ 2048 or I load it in
sendsx (you cant change settings, but thats what i upgraded to .93
with, 1st try, no prob.)
i access the early function menu or whatever its called and make sure
its waiting for midi upgrade by pushing trig 5. then i send it. the
computer tells it sends, the interface lights up with a blinking led
meaning it is active.

the 1st led on the left goes orange, then the rest go green from left
to right sequentially, when it reaches the 16th the greens turn off
and the orange turns on next to the 1st orange, the greens go on and
so on.

most times i get a message saying midi transfer failed, switch power
off and try again. sometime the monomachine just freezes, as in the
leds stop lighting up, while the cpu is definitely enaged in its
tranfer. these things dont always happen at the same time during the
process, it varies, sometimes like right off the bat, and i mean like
right when i select send on my pc. the most orange leds i got up to
was something like 4 or 5. i got that post saying that a soft reset
might help, so after an unsuccessful attempt, i reset it, sometimes 2
or three times. sometimes i dont reset, but i still get the same
results (error message or freeze) either way. So basically i do and
observe all that and then repeat.

and this is exactly how i went .93, nothing is different this time
going .95.

i just remembered that there's a midi file version, how do you use it?

hope thats a lil mor specific.
pat

Very clear now ;-)
It seems an intermittant problem since it happens at different
points during the upgrade. (the buffer problem occurs at a certain
point)
Your problem can be difficult to solve, maybe it's a faulty cable,
maybe you could upgrade the drivers for your midi card.
This upgrade is very large and any glitch during this process
results in a failure.
Do you have friends were you can try the upgrade?
Did you contact Elektron support about this?

The midi version of this upgrade can be imported in Cubase or Logic
or just played by the windows media player but be sure that you have
the proper midi card selected in control panel/Sound and Audio
devices/Audio tab/ midi devices.

Good luck,
Ronald.

Hey.

Sounds identical to a problem I was having about a
month ago. I got by it by setting the pause between
messages at 250 ms, transmitting asynchronous. Haven't
had any problems since then. If someone mentioned
this before, my apologies.

Hope this helps.

Hello all! I haven't posted here for quite some time now, but I figured now was as good of a time as any to fill in all of the north american owners of Elektron Equipment. Effective immediately, I am now the US based service rep for Elektron ESI. All repairs for North America will be handled by me, here in Los Angeles. You will still have to send all repair correspondance to Elektron in Sweden directly, but once they have recieved your information, they will then direct you to send your equipment to me, instead of over seas. Also, please keep the following in mind. I am a technician, not a programmer or designer. Please continue to direct all of your questions regarding operation of the MonoMachine to Daniel at Elektron. I just fix this stuff!

That said, in regards to the frustrations that Zebra has been having, I can say the following: I have had to upgrade the OS in a few Mono Machines, and this is what I have found. I have tried using Mac OSX 10.2.8 with Sysex Librarian. I have tried Windows 2000 with both MIDI-OX and Windows Media Player.

The only one that has worked for me thus far has been the Windows Media Player.

I am using Win 2K with a MidiSport 1x1 USB Interface. You have to set your prefered MIDI playback device to use the USB interface. I am very confident Zebra, that if you follow these instructions using your MOTU Fastlane USB interface, that you should have the same success. This will work for Windows XP as well.

Ok, so, go to 'Start'
Select 'Control Panel'
Select 'Sounds & Audio Devices' (for Windows 2000 users, this is called 'Sounds & MultiMedia')
Across the top, you will see a bunch of tabs. Select 'Audio'.
At the bottom of the menu, you will see 'MIDI Music Playback'
Select the MOTU Fastlane as your MIDI Device.
Download the latest OS from Elektron - There is a 0.95 now
In that package, once it is un-zipped, you will find a few files. There will be MMOs0_95.mid, MMOs0_95.sys and MMOs0_95.txt.
Just double click on the MMOs0_95.mid and it should open Windows Media Player for you. If it doesn't, you can manually open Windows Media Player and then select 'Open' from the file menu.
I am not sure if you get a choice of ports on the 'MIDI Music Playback' selection. If you don't, then I would assume you would have to have the MonoMachine connected to Port 1 of the Fastlane Interface.

If this still doesn't work, please feel free to email me with any other questions.

In my opinion, the Monomachine will be one of the next great Synths. Congratulations to all at Elektron and thank you to all of the Beta Testers for making it what it is today!

ooohhh cool thats good because i live in thousand oaks CA. my
sidstation needs to be repaired or something, i have already
contacted elektron, like maybe 2 weeks ago about it and they told me
to send it in to them. but ive been lagging on it because of the
whole customs thing. that couldnt be anymore convienient.

ok i tried sending the new OS like you said Bryon in
windowsmediaplayer, it didnt work, at first it was because i opened
the second port on my interface. then i openeed the 1st port, and it
still didn't work.

to the other Brian S: i tried setting the pause to 250ms, but i dont
know what this asyncronous transmitting thing is, so needless to say
i was unsuccessful.

ok Ronald, i do not believe i have a faulty cable because i can send
data from monomachine to the computer no problem, and i 've never had
any problems before with sysex on the interface on my other stuff. i
upgraded before to .93 with it. i upgraded to the lastest os for my
sidstation, like a week ago because Fredrik at Elektron thought that
it would fix my problem, the transfer worked, no problem. even though
it doesn't work it still got the new os. i tried swapping out a new
midi cable, and it still didn't work. the usb cable still works with
everything else i own, so i dont know what the deal is. the current
driver i have upgraded my MonoMachine to .93 no problem, and i dont
have any friends where i can try the upgrade at, i live in thousand
oaks, home of a thousand dorks, Bryon D. might know what im talking
about or he might not. and i havent contacted elektron about it,
though i will right after this.

anyways i appreciate the help, ill keep trying.
thanks
ZEBRA

Zebra,
in one case it still looks like that USB-Midi-Interfaces got some
propbs, specially with long SYSEX - Files. I have no problem at all
updating MM to 0.95 using Midi-OC and my RME DSP Hammerfall Multiface.
But i heard also on many other groups that there are problems with USB.
Can you still do a whole reset of the MM, if yes try this, also try to
load OS 0.94 first.
Also, i know this sounds weird, download 0.95 again and unpack it. It
was happened to me one day, that i downloaded i file, i was able to
unpack it, but it was corrupted (some bites).
Just give MM another try, it should work.
Good Luck,
Stefan

Zebra,

Maybe it's the MOTU-Interface. My old MOTU was not able to transmit
longer sysex-files properly because of the extremely poor windows-
driver. The problem was known to MOTU, but they didnt react to this
problem. I bet they still havent. So I bought Emagics Unitor MIDI-
interface - no problems here.

A workaround: Do you have a friend who could upgrade the OS for you?

[elektron] Re: same ol sysex problems on the monomachine<-----------------

There seems to be a lot of problems with OS-upgrade and lot of
answers. Maybe someone could copy-paste these and make somekind of OS
upgrade Faq? This could be attached to OS-zips. Anyone? (I'm too busy
with my work, and besides my OS-upgrades always work, so I don't
understand the different options and terms here (asynchronous, ms-
latencies between packets and so on (yeah, I'm lucky)).

Toni.

ooooooops,
hey Stefan,
when you mentioned hammerfall i remembered i had i an m-audio 1010LT
in my computer that i almost forgot about, i hardly use it because of
all the damn cords that stick out. i just set it as my midi playback
device and loaded the update in windows media player. it worked like
a charm, maybe i should remember these things. i guess i was just
being retarded.
thanks for everyone's input though.
peace,
ZEBRA
