tortoise uses md and sid!

tortoise uses md and sid!

2004-05-02 by scutopus

i recently saw tortoise play a wonderful live set, and went to
trts.com to check out their site. it's a good site, and it had a link
to elektron!! i investigated further, and found that they have a
sidstation and md in their studio in chicago (soma).

does anyone know offhand of any tracks of theirs that have the sid or
md on them?

thanks,
wendell.

they also have a link to the Elektron site from their webpage :-)

BTW, this is sweet that you're into the same music I love! I'm seeing
Tortoise next week and I'm incredibly excited about it! I missed them
last time and they're one of my favorite bands.

I don't know off hand. but there's some things to note. first, Soma is
owned/run by John McEntire who is part of Tortoise as well as the
drummer for the Sea and Cake (also a great band). John went to school
for electronic music and has studied synthesis exclusively, so it's not
surprising that he has the great gear that he does at Soma! I've
looked around the Sea and Cake forum a bit and John's been known to
answer questions about what gear was used. In fact, he once gave a
run down of all synths that were used on the Sea and Cake's "One
Bedroom" and the SID was among them. anyway, if you ask in the
Tortoise website's forum, he may answer this question for you.

MnM question

2004-05-02 by Automatic Panic

Is there any way to use one track to control all of
the other tracks like as if it were a midi. that way I
could trigger all the tracks with the multi trig mode
and it will be in sync instead of using my keys.

yo, lemme know if they play "whitewater" or "jetty". they didn't in
boston, but who knows? they did play djed, which was a pleasant
surprise. you'll dig the show, no doubt. i couldn't see if they had
an md or sid on stage from where i was....

i haven't checked out the sea & cake yet. should, no? 3 of the 5 guys
played drums--herndon played the most and bitney and mcentire tied
for 2nd, i think. bitney is quite outgoing onstage--definitely
enjoying himself. all of them were visibly happy to be playing music.
bitney and herndon are also in isotope 217.
interesting/makes sense that mcentire went to "synthesis school"!
i posted something on the trts.com boards. shall i post the response
here? enough interest?
thanks, j, for all the info!

syncing issue with monomachine

2004-05-02 by Gene Schwartz

I was having the damndest time syncing to other gear with the monomachine,
and eventually traced it to having a swing setting on the monomachine. If I
move the swing setting from 50%, the monomachine doesn't sync correctly, but
sends sync correctly on the MIDI thru to the machinedrum, even if the
machinedrum has a swing setting other than 50%. The swung notes are set on
every other step on both instruments, so it doesn't appear to be some
strange swing setting...

It happens even if I create a new pattern and put a kick drum on every
quarter note. The default swing pattern shouldn't affect those notes, as I
understand the way it's supposed to work. When in external sync, however,
the pattern plays too slowly.

Can someone try this, preferably with the latest OS? I don't remember this
as being an issue before. And maybe I'm hallucinating now!

Those guys are doing alot of different stuff. The Sea and Cake are
definite favorites. I was recently wishing I had some of their cds
with me. I might have to go through some illegalities to get some
tracks. They do so many collaborations and side projects I wouldn't
be surprised those machines are used on many diferent albums off their
label.

MnM question

2004-12-02 by Numina

Greetings,

Upgraded my MnM to OS 1.05, no problem there.

My problem is, for example, using Preset B-3, no matter which first note I
play on my master synth (on midi channel 7) the MnM pattern begins to play
from its original root note. But when I play a note on the master synth
after the first note had been sent (and as the MnM is playing) then it
transposes to the note I'm playing on my master synth. So, in other words,
I have to hit the note twice on my master synth in order for it to
transpose to the note I want the MnM to start from which causes problems
since the first time I play a note it will always play that note until a
new note is sent.

Now, I have gone in and modified the pattern to be on "Direct" timing mode
and that does work (i.e. the first note sent to the MnM plays where I want
it to) BUT then it re-starts from the beginning of the pattern each time I
hit a note.

What I want to do is be able to start the pattern anywhere I want from my
master synth and then be able to change notes as the pattern is playing
without it starting over. I'm sure it's something simple that I'm missing
but can't find it.

Thanks,

Jesse
