where's the bass?

where's the bass?

2004-07-22 by hupf0001

hi elektron users

i'm a proud owner of the MnM and i find it very very cool. i
especially love the authentic electronic sound it has (for the drums
and other freaky stuff).

but i haven't figured out how to make confincing bass sounds with the
MnM. i think the whole MnM sound strongly lacks of bass (compared to
other synths).

am i doing something wrong or is this your opinion too?
what machines do you prefer for doing bass sounds and what parameters
are imporant?
or do you simply use other equipment to do the bass sounds?

greetings,
hupf

it might sound a bit obvious but have you tried the equalizer?
I find that boosting the low frequencies gives me all the bass i want.
i made some satisfying bass sounds using the supersaw and sidstation engines to create
some interesting attacks and then pump up the low end with the eq until it sounds fat and
solid.
adding a compressor fx helps too.

Adding a hint of distorsion helps too.

YIKES!
Man all I can get from this thing is bass lol
All jokes aside, you can get bass from just about any machine, but the
params you need to tweak on each are slightly different.

Here's an easy example:
Take Track1 and load a blank SWAVE-SAW machine into it.
Program in a simple bassline using either octave 2, if you want more
of a subbass type sound, or octave 3 if you want a bit more of an
in-your-face sound. Let's do C3 for this.

Synthesis page:
The first three params you can pretty much set to whatever you want.
SUBX = 64
SUB1 = 100
SUB2 = 127

Amplification page:
HOLD = 2 or 3 (but this is not necessary, it is only to make the example
quite blatant)
VOL = 100+
(I find that distortion on bassy sounds can work in very small amounts
but it is too easy to get some nasty clipping)

Filter page:
BASE = 0 (This is not set in stone though, I find sometimes only
tweaking it maybe to 2,3,8 etc can yield some very cool results)
WIDTH = 18 (If you have a naaasty little acidic saw edge you're trying
to do then you can sweep this param from 18 to 36 or so to get some
niiice results)
LPQ = 36 (adjust this to liking as well, but remember that the oomph is
coming from this param, too little and you wont hear it.. too much and
it starts squelching)
BOFS = anywhere from 0 to -20 or so, adjust it to your liking

By now you should have a decently bassy sound coming out.
If you really want to crank it:

Effects page:
EQF = 20-25 or so
EQG = 10-15 or so (adjust to liking)

I'm sitting at work telling you this, so hopefully I'm right, but I've
made so many bass patches I can almost do them with my eyes closed :)

Anyways.. play around with each machine, and remember that the filter
is your friend. Try different octaves with different machines, as some
yield different results than others.

Let me know what you come up with ;)

Also,
If you want some examples of basses that I have done on the mono, let me
know and I will post some links. I never use any other processing on it
or anything besides some compression.

bass is no problem -> i usually work with saw or puls machine for
baselines -> if you want i can send you a kit...

You've been missing out then :)
I only really use the superwave machines for bass if I am trying to go
for a more grungy acidic sound.
The bass you can make with FM+, DPRO-WAVE, and the SID machines is
pretty damn sick though ;)

thanks very much for all the hints. i'll try them out as soon as i
stay infront of my MnM.

chris & michael:
i would be glad if you can post some links here or send me examples.
it's always good to hear it :-)

greez,
hupf

ps. wow chris, you must know the MnM quite good - telling me this by
heart! ;-)

Let's see here.. I've got a couple decent bass examples in some drafts I
have. These are by no means complete or polished but it will give you a
good idea of some possibilities.

Watch out for the delay feedback on the synth. I kinda went nuts :)
This is a good use of the "hold" param in the amp page, when used for
bass.

Here's a spooky little number I was messing with the other day. Not much
of a structure to it as I was mostly just messing with some different
sounds and ideas. But the bassline grooves a long quite well.

Turn it up :)

the filters on them MnM make all the basses sound the
same. I was hoping that it could emulate analog basses
better. I use any of the machines to create a bass
sound but they all pretty much sound the same.

Agreed. Not a bad thing, but new filter option would give more
useability (well it's pretty useable allready...)

Toni.

I hear, what you mean that you only get bass sounds from MnM!
Very 'bassy' stuff.. I like that it is totally different than what
I've heard from other people or MnM itself. :)

Toni.

A little somthing I did with my Monomachine

I recorded this tonight, it's not the best so don't
ragg me to hard. :(
