you dont have to map anything the conversion does it for you to the format that is required by the host sampler

even software samplers that can play sf2 instruments can be used

emax2 is not like an EII at all 

emulatorx1/2/3 all read sf2 and can convert emax2 instruments

software wise its the closest thing to a e4ultra and has the emu sound but the EII filters are great and the synth engine is better on the EII as the emax playback rate is not as high as the EII anbd when converting EII banks some reach the playback limit and carry on playing the same tone after the playback rate is reached

  I had seen that elsewhere, but since I also saw that emax2 was like emulator (ll?) and they were readable by the oberheim but not the emax, I wasn't sure.

  My goal is to find something rack mount where I can read these discs for not too much $$$.

  I don't have the knowledge to do the software hacks, conversions, and such I have seen referenced here. Just want simple way to play old samples. Definitely do not want to have to map samples, no worries about old sequences, etc, just sound banks.

    There's (almost) no work to be done when using Emax-1 banks in an Emax-2. 

    The main differences (besides possibility of larger banks in an Emax-2) are:
    - the Emax-1 uses compressed samples in 8 bits while the Emax-2 uses linear 16 bit samples. When loading an Emax-1 bank into the Emax-2, the Emax-2 sampler automatically converts the samples in the bank (takes a few seconds...). The difference in sample format is the main reason why most other samplers don't support Emax-1 banks.
    - the Emax-1 deals differently with stereo than the Emax-2. In some cases, after loading an Emax-1 bank into the Emax-2, you may have to correct the stereo voice/panning settings because the sound may only be heard on one channel (depending on the panning settings and dual voice settings on the Emax-1). In practice that's the only potential bit of work that you may have to do.


    FYI: as mentioned, EMXP can convert Emax-1 banks. One of the conversions supported is the same conversion to Emax-2 format as is being done by the Emax-2 sampler itself when loading Emax-1 banks. So if you convert them in this way and e.g burn the converted banks on an Emax-2 formatted cdrom, all samplers that support Emax-2 banks can read your banks...
