Sounds like the drive. Mine died the same way. It may be fixable per an earlier post from elmacaco but... It might be time that you look into replacing the drive though for your data's sake. I bought a few drives to try and see which one would work. Quite a few of them did. So now I have a few extras. They are formatted and already preconfigured for the Emax. If it turns out that you need a drive let me know...
