what is it?

what is it?

A chip for the emax on ebay, I'll ask the seller, if no one knows
but I'd prefer to do that second, since I have no intention to buy it.

iz my HD dead

2003-11-12 by Ben Model

I turned on my emax HD today, after not using it for some months, and the
LCD display doesn't go further than its first screen:

E-mu Systems Inc
Loading Software

The red LED on the floppy drive is lit red. The "analog processing" light
is lit. Nothing happens...until I put in an emax floppy, and then the HD
loads the bank from the disc.

Why isn't it loading on its own? What do I do?

Thanks!

Ben

When I power the HD on I do not hear the usual start-up whirring of the
drive. Either hard drive is dead or its power supply is. How fixable is
this? Anyone?

Thanks!

Sounds like the drive. Mine died the same way. It may be fixable per
an earlier post from elmacaco but... It might be time that you look
into replacing the drive though for your data's sake. I bought a few
drives to try and see which one would work. Quite a few of them did.
So now I have a few extras. They are formatted and already
preconfigured for the Emax. If it turns out that you need a drive let
me know... I will sell one to you...or anyone for that matter.

It is not spinning. Cannot find your post on manually spinning the disk (or
don't know where to find it...I just get the posts in my inbox). Can you
email me the procedure?

Thanks.

Re: [emax] iz my HD dead

2003-11-19 by elmacaco

I've fixed a few Emax HD's this way, and I hope it helps some people out
there.

if the problem is it isn't spinning, and you don't hear any HD noise,

Open it up, take the lid off of the hard drive, it has some weird screws in
the top, I used a small screwdriver like for glasses and a pair of pliers
for more leverage on the screwdriver. Be careful not to strip the screws.
Or if you find the right bit to open these, use that (I wish I had one.)

If worse comes to worse, you can use pliers to loosen the screws then use
your fingers.

This can be really tough, so be patient.

Once it is open, you will see the HD disk and the arm that writes to it.
DON"T TOUCH IT!!! The disk or the arm, just very gently start the disk
spinning (powered off and with the power cable disconnected) clockwise by
touching the metal disk in the middle (like the cardboard in the middle of a
record). spin it clockwise well a couple of times.

Then apply power before closing it up, the disk should start spinning on
power up. Close it up and you're all set.

By the way, you need to have the emax rack upside down to open it up.

Re: [emax] My HD emax LIVES!! (was "iz my HD dead")

2003-11-21 by Ben Model

Ed,

This WORKED. My HD lives! All banks+funcitons+memory intact! **whew**

Any measures to be taken to keep this from happening again? Or is it a
matter of powering the unit on every once in a while, like turning over the
engine of a car that's been sitting around for a long time?

A million thanks!!

Ben

Re: [emax] My HD emax LIVES!! (was "iz my HD dead")

2003-11-22 by elmacaco

Heh, I'm a legend! ;-)

I'm glad this helped someone else. This makes 3 emaxes that I know of that
have used this technique instead of getting a new HD.

Nothing I know of to prevent it, I try turn it on often just in case, just
to spin the drive.

I had it happen to my rack when I drilled the hole for the scsi connector,
so I think vibration may be a trigger. I think also inactivity is the major
cause.

I haven't had it happen again, but it is good to know you can fix it.

And to think this came from my curiosity and frustration at having to buy a
new harddrive!!

Is yours a rack or keyboard?

Glad I could help.

Ed

All doubters kneel!!!! ;-)

My emax HD is a rack. I also have a keyboard (runs off floppies) which I
will be selling.
