Thanks e-synthesist, We all really appreciate what you are doing, no pressure, just throwing out some ideas and hopefully making it easier for you at the same time.
I would think the different keys of the same preset, then all samples will be neatly in order in on preset on one key each and you can copy them to a new preset to spread them out as far as you like. I think it would be more awkward to have to copy voices from other presets to make up say a multisample instrument than to have all the samples in one preset. Something like a drum program would be the most labor intensive copying and key zoning from multiple presets, yet setting a multisample from a 'drum' mapping of however many samples would be quite quick.
I think the program you describe is perfect, I always hoped such a program existed just to dump waves into the emax. I never liked sampling from the computer. I do have a question tho, the sample rate compatibility with the emax, does that include any of the sample rates that on can sample on the emax in? like 10k, 16k, 22k, 28k, etc? I know those numbers are rounded, so we will have to convert them to the actual exact sample rate in the audio software correct?
Thanks again for taking this on, I'm not in a rush since I already resolved myself to not have any kind of wav import, so patience is not a problem, although dangling the possibility will cause much anticipation.
If you need a Beta tester, you got one.

Subject: [emax] Re: Program to read EMAX disk images almost ready
Hi E.,
Sure, your advice makes perfectly sense.
It would definitely be better to put the sample simply at the
originale pitch key and to transpose it yourself on the EMAX. Do you
think all WAV files should be put on different keys of the *same*
preset ?
I thought about it yesterday and I think I'm able to release such
program in quite a short period of time. But it would be a very
simple program - and I really mean simple (and of course MS-DOS as my
programming skills are pre-historical; maybe I should learn about
window programming :-)
The program could be something like:
1) user puts the WAV files in a dedicated directory
2) program checks the WAV files:
- sample rate must be compatible with EMAX (if not, you have to
convert it with your favorite sound software)
- program asks whether EMAX disk image should be compressed EMAX
1 or full 16-bit EMAX 2
- program calculates the EMAX memory usage for each WAV file
3) program creates the single - or multidisk image with default
parameters for VCA, VCF, LFO, etc...
4) user uses EMX to make the actual disks
5) user loads disks into EMAX and does all other editing on EMAX.
What do you think ?
Anyway, I'll still finish the reader program first. After this is
succesful, I will consider the other thing. A writer program - even
such a simple one - is quite a challenge compared to a reader program
because the created image may not contain any errors. I mean: the
specifications on which I depend must be 100% correct, otherwise EMAX
will crash.
Anyway I think the alpha version of the reader will be released in
the last week of october (besides my synth-time I also have a
fulltime job & other things to do and I have to go on a business trip
for the whole next week :-)

exactly what I would want. I just want to be able to get wav files
into the emax, all the editing and such would be more fun on the emax
than on a computer editor, although that functionality wouldn't be
terrible to have either, it is not needed.

to calculate how much of the emax memory you have used up wit each
added wav file so you don't go over the limit, and perhaps the
default program having each wav file exist on one key and have that
key be it's original pitch. the latter is so that if you are loading
numerous short samples you will be able to find them quickly using
the keys or midi for us rack users and reassign any transpositions
afterwards in the emax. If you like I can create the bank with
single sample per key assignment if an when you need it. just let me
know what other specifications you may need.

wav importability, it's going to be so much fun.
