Program to read EMAX disk images almost ready

Program to read EMAX disk images almost ready

2005-10-08 by esynthesist

Hi,

Just a short message to inform you that during the past few weeks I've
been working on that EMAX librarian PC-software I announced a few
messages ago.
It's going to be a PC-program that:
- can be started from an HTML 'EMAX Librarian' page
- will scan all emax1- and emax2-disk images on its directory (images
must have been created with the EMX program)
- will make a set of (hyperlinked) HTML pages containing all parameter
settings of all presets, voices and samples in each bank
- will make .WAV files of all samples

The software is not finished yet but things are going pretty well.
The EMAX 1/EMAX 2 disk image parser is ready, as is the core HTML
report generator. But the whole thing needs some further refinement
and - of course - some basic testing before I release it to the group.

I think an "alpha" version will be released to the files section of
this group within 1 - 3 weeks (probably 3 :-). That version will not be
bug-free (I think) and will not be able yet to report Sequencer
information and Spectrum Synthesis information.

A last note: the core software will be a small DOS program but don't
panic: you won't have to use DOS ! Everything can be done from within a
web browser...

Bye

Hey E-Synthesist,

Excellent news on your software. I am looking forward to trying it
out. One thing that confused me is that you say that images must
have been created with EMX, does that mean it will not read Standard
Emax 1 and 2 formatted floppy discs?

Wow! That sounds great! Thanks so much for doing this.

Will the alpha version be able to create em1 banks from wav files?

Re: Program to read EMAX disk images almost ready

2005-10-09 by esynthesist

Mmmm... I expected this question :-)

The answer is no. The program only *reads* EMAX images, it doesn't
*write* them.
However it's not very difficult to make such program.

Anyway I first want to make a stable version of the EMAX Librarian
reader software.

After this is accomplished, I can make a simple program to create
EMAX 1/EMAX 2 disk images. This program will simply take the .WAV
files you selected and will put them in "default" presets on an EMAX
disk image. This means that you will get default VCA and VCF
envelopes, a transposition of the sample to the whole keyboard etc...
That disk then can be loaded (via EMX) on your EMAX sampler.
Finishing all preset and voice parameters should be done directly on
the EMAX.

An important remark however... I'm also watching Chicken Systems. If
they succeed in supporting EMAX with their Translator software, and
they give an EMAX image creator in their free download version, I
will *not* make that software.

Regards,

///E-Synthesist

Hi,

Where did you get all the addressing and file struture
for the emax files? You know, the header, file
structure, how to create default program banks,
etc...? This sound so cool!

Thanks

Re: [emax] Re: Program to read EMAX disk images almost ready

Mmmm... I expected that answer ;c)

Ok, I get what you are saying. The librarian is still a great program and will be of great use to me for sure.

The bank creation program you describe sounds perfect to me and exactly what I would want. I just want to be able to get wav files into the emax, all the editing and such would be more fun on the emax than on a computer editor, although that functionality wouldn't be terrible to have either, it is not needed.

The only thing I would think would be important would be something to calculate how much of the emax memory you have used up wit each added wav file so you don't go over the limit, and perhaps the default program having each wav file exist on one key and have that key be it's original pitch. the latter is so that if you are loading numerous short samples you will be able to find them quickly using the keys or midi for us rack users and reassign any transpositions afterwards in the emax. If you like I can create the bank with single sample per key assignment if an when you need it. just let me know what other specifications you may need.

that is my thinking on the matter as it makes the most sense to me. if it is not possible then it's not a problem. I'll take any wav importability, it's going to be so much fun.

and I understand about Chicken systems, totally understandable, although I hope to see you accomplish it.

Thanks again E.

Re: Program to read EMAX disk images almost ready

2005-10-10 by esynthesist

Now that's the big secret :-)

I certainly didn't get the information from E-Mu Systems.
In fact I didn't really ask them.
Well, I figured it out myself - but I can guarantee this was no fun
at all and also very time consuming !
And my EMAX 2 did suffer from this process: my baby is almost dead :-(
I hope it will survive the software release, otherwise I can't test
it anymore...

Anyway, figuring out the specs myself is a good excuse for not having
to promise that the software will ever be bug-free :-) That's why it
will be free without guaranteed support.
But the current pre-alpha version on my PC handles all test banks
(both compressed original EMAX ZD-images and my own 16-bit-images)
100% correct so I think it's going to be OK...

Ciao,

Re: Program to read EMAX disk images almost ready

2005-10-10 by esynthesist

Hi E.,

Sure, your advice makes perfectly sense.
It would definitely be better to put the sample simply at the
originale pitch key and to transpose it yourself on the EMAX. Do you
think all WAV files should be put on different keys of the *same*
preset ?

I thought about it yesterday and I think I'm able to release such
program in quite a short period of time. But it would be a very
simple program - and I really mean simple (and of course MS-DOS as my
programming skills are pre-historical; maybe I should learn about
window programming :-)

The program could be something like:
1) user puts the WAV files in a dedicated directory
2) program checks the WAV files:
    - sample rate must be compatible with EMAX (if not, you have to
convert it with your favorite sound software)
    - program asks whether EMAX disk image should be compressed EMAX
1 or full 16-bit EMAX 2
    - program calculates the EMAX memory usage for each WAV file
3) program creates the single - or multidisk image with default
parameters for VCA, VCF, LFO, etc...
4) user uses EMX to make the actual disks
5) user loads disks into EMAX and does all other editing on EMAX.

What do you think ?

Anyway, I'll still finish the reader program first. After this is
succesful, I will consider the other thing. A writer program - even
such a simple one - is quite a challenge compared to a reader program
because the created image may not contain any errors. I mean: the
specifications on which I depend must be 100% correct, otherwise EMAX
will crash.

Anyway I think the alpha version of the reader will be released in
the last week of october (besides my synth-time I also have a
fulltime job & other things to do and I have to go on a business trip
for the whole next week :-)

Regards,

Re: [emax] Re: Program to read EMAX disk images almost ready

2005-10-10 by elmacaco

Thanks e-synthesist, We all really appreciate what you are doing, no pressure, just throwing out some ideas and hopefully making it easier for you at the same time.

I would think the different keys of the same preset, then all samples will be neatly in order in on preset on one key each and you can copy them to a new preset to spread them out as far as you like. I think it would be more awkward to have to copy voices from other presets to make up say a multisample instrument than to have all the samples in one preset. Something like a drum program would be the most labor intensive copying and key zoning from multiple presets, yet setting a multisample from a 'drum' mapping of however many samples would be quite quick.

I think the program you describe is perfect, I always hoped such a program existed just to dump waves into the emax. I never liked sampling from the computer. I do have a question tho, the sample rate compatibility with the emax, does that include any of the sample rates that on can sample on the emax in? like 10k, 16k, 22k, 28k, etc? I know those numbers are rounded, so we will have to convert them to the actual exact sample rate in the audio software correct?

Thanks again for taking this on, I'm not in a rush since I already resolved myself to not have any kind of wav import, so patience is not a problem, although dangling the possibility will cause much anticipation.

If you need a Beta tester, you got one.

Re: Program to read EMAX disk images almost ready

2005-10-11 by esynthesist

You're right about dedicating samples to keys in the same preset. I
will do it like you describe.

The sample rates supported by EMAX 2 are:
10000(*), 15625(*), 20000, 22050(**), 27778, 31250, 41667(*), 44100(*)
(**) and 39000 (**) Hz.

(*):
EMAX 2: Only available for sample rate conversion, but that's OK
for .WAV files too.
EMAX 1: Also available as sample frequency.
(**): Not available on EMAX1 (as far as I understand - I don't have
an EMAX 1 to check this; I thought EMAX1 could also sample at 39
kHz ?).

These frequencies are stored in the EMAX disk image by using
a "sample rate identifier" between 0 and 8 (which corresponds to the
9 possible values shown above).

I certainly appreciate the fact that you want to be a Beta tester.
Especially for the "writer" program a lot of testing will be
necessary.

By the way: the program will only support mono and stereo .WAV files,
no 5.1 or whatever surround stuff.
But I guess this is OK for us :-)

samples will be neatly in order in on preset on one key each and you
can copy them to a new preset to spread them out as far as you like.
I think it would be more awkward to have to copy voices from other
presets to make up say a multisample instrument than to have all the
samples in one preset. Something like a drum program would be the
most labor intensive copying and key zoning from multiple presets,
yet setting a multisample from a 'drum' mapping of however many
samples would be quite quick.

program existed just to dump waves into the emax. I never liked
sampling from the computer. I do have a question tho, the sample
rate compatibility with the emax, does that include any of the sample
rates that on can sample on the emax in? like 10k, 16k, 22k, 28k,
etc? I know those numbers are rounded, so we will have to convert
them to the actual exact sample rate in the audio software correct?

Hey E,

Great work on this software! I am looking forward to trying it out. You say that the images must have been made with EMX. This might sound foolish but, does that mean it will read standard Emax II disks or does that mean the disks had to be made with the DOS EMX program?

Re: Program to read EMAX disk images almost ready

2005-10-11 by esynthesist

It should work with original EMAX disks. Because even in that case
you need EMX to copy the image to the PC.
In fact, the disks themselves are all "pure EMAX" (original or not),
only the images on your PC are "EMX stuff". And when EMX writes a
disk, the disk becomes "pure EMAX" again. My program will only accept
EMX images, but that's not a problem because the original images are
simply not accessible without using EMX first...

By the way: I would love to port EMX to "non-native DOS", so that you
can use it from a DOS box in Windows instead of booting the PC in DOS-
mode. But that's not an easy thing to do because of the low-level
software code that has been used in EMX...

Anyway, regarding your question: no problem I guess !

Re: [emax] Re: Program to read EMAX disk images almost ready

2005-10-13 by elmacaco

The Emax I doesn't do stereo unless it's a primary / secondary thing, I'm not sure how the emax II does it, but if it supports stereo sampling then there should be something like a note saying to only use mono samples with the emax. unless it will translate stereo to the pri/sec arrangement, which I never use so it's not an issue for me either way.

10k, 16k, 20k, 28k, 31k, and 42k are the rates the emax I can sample at.

I'm glad I could help. Whenever you want to start testing let me know.

Something like a drum program would be the
most labor intensive copying and key zoning from multiple presets,
yet setting a multisample from a 'drum' mapping of however many
  samples would be quite quick.

sampling from the computer.

Hi, please disregard that last email, it was an old email sitting in my

Hey E-Synthesist,

Excellent news on your software. I am looking forward to trying it
out. One thing that confused me is that you say that images must
have been created with EMX, does that mean it will not read Standard
Emax 1 and 2 formatted floppy discs?
