Re: [emax] Emu Filter differences - fan noise - HD removal

2005-12-17 by elmacaco

Booting from floppy is not the end of it, the emax then accesses the floppy to perform different functions. I could never disconnect the HD in mine for that reason alone, it would slow me down more.

The noise from the HD is loud, but it varies between units (and perhaps HD's?) mine's not the loudest I've heard but not much softer.

I think just removing power to it should do it. maybe remove the internal scsi cable as well, but that might not be necessary.

I like the external zip a lot too. maybe there's a way to get a internal zip drive in an enclosure to make it external that then can be set to SCSI ID 0 ??

I've just imported some EMAX II samples into the Esynth, rev 4.62,
and found some sounds haven't translated too well.
Seems to be the filter settings that suffer. The Esynth's 4 pole
filter and Q settings, looking like they translated well, with a
precise frequency rather than a 0-120 Fc number, sounded thinner,
lacking weight and bottom end. Although there's a good selection of
filters, I haven't been able to exactly recreate the original sound.
  Any theories on this ?

Has anybody been bothered by the noise of the Esynth rack's fan ?
It's not just the whirring but the whining as well. I replaced mine
with a Papst but didn't get much improvement, so have disconnected
it. There's a lot of free space inside and ventilation on the power
supply casing so I'm hoping it should be OK.

One final question, regarding removing or disconnecting Emax 1´s hard
disk, is it an easy job disconnecting it internally ?
Have other users been bothered about the output level of HD noise ?
I have an external zip that I prefer to use but will I have to boot
from a floppy as the zip is configured for scsi 5 or 6 only.

  regards
  Lyn
