Emax

EMX won't work in a DOS box under Windows 95 or later OSs, I can't imagine it would 
work under NT either. I've been saying for a long time that I believe the reason is 
because from Win 95 on Microsoft took liberties to use some of the boot sectors on 
floppies for it's own purposes and the Emax/Emax II uses those same sectors as well. 
Since Windows blocks access to those sectors the formatting and often writing process 
of EMX will not work. You need to boot directly into DOS 6.22 or earlier.  

I quote this from Rob Keeble, it's pretty much the same advice I give out as well:

It is essential it is run under DOS, and that new DS/DD diskettes are used. HD diskettes 
will not work, they have a different number of tracks and the media has slightly different 
magnetic properties. 

The procedure we have found 90% success with is (for nearly 200 EM1 files):

Format the a brand new diskette in an Emax /Emax II.
Boot the PC with DOS 6.22.
Launch EMX 
Format the diskette with EMX
Write the diskette with EMX.
Read the diskette into the Emax/Emax II.

OurEmax II is more tolerant of EM1 files than our 3Emax's, for some reason !You may 
find an older PC works better than a new one, and that booting from a DOS diskette 
works better than using DOS within Win 95/98/NT. Of course Win2000/ME do not have 
DOS.
