Emax

I've been struggling with emax I sound banks downloaded from the emuarchive
site.  I've finally gotten my hands on an old IBM thinkpad running Win 3.1
which has the version of DOS which the EMX app (supposedly) behaves with.

I've used EMX with this equipment using new DS/DD floppies to write sound
banks to disks.  When I put the disks in my emax I keyboard or emax HD, most
of them do not work: they contain no presets, and one keeps freezing the
emax.  The one or two banks that did work have a couple of presets that are
dead.

Is it simply a matter of writing the bank several times and hoping one of
the "writes" is good?  Or is there yet another PC or DOS factor I'm missing?
With the HD (rev 1.1) should I be using the emax I or emax II banks?
