You can format the zip but you won't be able to boot to it, since the Emax I only boots to SCSI ID# 0, and as you pointed out the external zip has only IDs 5 and 6). Once the Plus OS is booted from floppy, hold down the TRANSPOSE button on the Emax and press 5 or 6 to change the current SCSI ID to match the ZIP drive.
