external ZIP 100 problem

2007-10-16 by mks50

hi everybody , i'm running the PLUS O.S and i can't format the ZIP
since it doesn't seem to be detected . must I active the termination
behind the zip drive , or is it impossible to format an external zip
(for i can use only ID 5 or 6 ).
thanks a lot ?

Yes, you must terminate the Zip.

You can format the zip but you won't be able to boot to it, since the Emax I
only boots to SCSI ID# 0, and as you pointed out the external zip has only
IDs 5 and 6).

Once the Plus OS is booted from floppy, hold down the TRANSPOSE button on
the Emax and press 5 or 6 to change the current SCSI ID to match the ZIP
drive. Now try to format the zip (which should indeed be terminated).

Sorry, I forgot about this key piece of information: I think the Plus OS
expects to see a device at ID 0. Do you have a SCSI drive you can put on the
chain at ID#0?

It's been a year or so since I was experimenting with the external ZIP and I
think I was only able to get my Emax to read/write to external ZIPs with a
hard drive on the chain at ID#0.

I have since replaced the external ZIP with an internal SCSI ZIP drive,
which can be set to SCSI ID 0.

thanks a lot dude , but I only have my old HD which died years ago. do
you think it will work with it ?

Just open the HD and spin it a few times, it'll come back to life. You'll need hex wrenches though. After that a hard slap on the HD will star it spinning again if it stops again.

Sometimes I have the same problem. Did you try a few times ?
I have to press Transpose and at least 3 or 4 times the "6" button
before the Emax Plus recognizes the Zipdrive on SCSI 6 and replaces
the "0" by "6" on the display.
PS: if I remember well you can also use a DOS-formatted ZIP disk and
simply copy some banks to it with EMXP (after creating+restoring a
blank image to it first). The EMAX-I recognizes such a ZIP disk after
pressing "Transpose + 5/6" and "load bank".

i took good notice of your advises but it doesn't seems to work since

my hard disk is dead ( the red led is still blinking as if the scsi
chain works ) but i' m not sure in which order i must link the zip nd
the hard disk . i must precise my emax is actually a baldwin ike
clone but is SE rev C .
i was willing to test with an internal zip buti have no power supply
connector for it ( i have to plug my hard disk on a computer psu nearby)
do you have an idea ?
thanks a lot for all your great works around emax . u rule
