A lot of the prized grit and punch of the SP12 comes from the more crude sample playback transposition method. I believe the SP12 is actually true 12 bit all the way through too, whereas the Emax 1 uses 12 bit A/D and D/A conversters but 8 bit compressed storage. So the type of distortion will be different between the two. For added "punch" you can of course clip the signal going into the Emax A/D when you sample.
