it is a little pricey as they tend to sell for $500-800 the rack is
better and more reliable built like a tank same filters as emax but
sixteen of them

the operating system is rubbish the esi32 o.s. is made from the e3 but
with a few more features the only thing going for it is the 8mb and it
has analog filters but it dont have the se function of the emax
which when combined with samples make some nice evolving sounds

i have an emulator4ultra which has 128mb ram and has cube filters
6pole that i use for larger samples

but i get more inspired by my low memory samplers as they make you
more creative and lofi

i have a mirage with 8 outs and a matrix twelve filter switcher which
give me 15 filter responses i then us soundprocess os which turn it
into a sampler version of the esq1 synth but using your own single
cycle wave forms you can use upto 4 diferent single cycle waveforms
for its voices
the mirage only has 128k of sample ram in to banks of 64k

the thing is with analog filters you dont need a lot of sample time
you can use single cycle waves just like the analog synths oscillators
its the filters that produce the sweeps blips not the samples
themselves it was akai with its digital none resonance filters that
needed big sample time because they had to sample the sweep because
there filters could not produce it this was the same for the later
ensoniq samplers aswell but the emax 1 and 2 can produce the same
response with the synth section the prophet 5 used the same filters as
the emax in its rev 1 boards they changed to curtis filter chips in
later rev boards

its the analog filters that shape the sound

i use my korg dss1 which only has 256k memory but i get great sounding
sync sounds as this is the only sampler to produce it and the filters
are fatter than any other analog synth i own with the 8 note 16voice
unison mode fat fat fat

i also like the kurzweil k2000 and its vast synthesis and digital
filters are great

i think the roland has the best sounding lowpass resonant digital filters

the akai s3200 is the best sounding of the akai more analog sounding
than the s1000/1100/3000/3000xl range

and i like the eps16+/asr10 for its transwave synthesis.

i also mod them for better function like the mirage

you can fit the matrix 12 filter switcher to the emax you can fit 8 of
them this is my next prodject
