Yes, someone owns the copyright.
I determined who that was..... I called them on the phone.
They would not sell me a license even 2 yrs ago for the dead product for any price.

So I hunted down a second hand copy....

I know it's out there on Limewire, but I would not trust that the copy is free of virii and possible trojans, etc.

Does anybody know if there is any harm in giving it out? Somebody still must own it as intellectual property, right?

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
