Although having written what I did below, I must admit that my last attempt yesterday has worked better than expected.
I pumped the transformer in the inverter full of plastic spray (the one you use to coat PCB's with) yesterday.
This has now hardened and has almost completely silenced it.

Oh well, trust me to check that AFTER ordering the new inverters...
