now see i new it was that i have had this a number of times where people have messed with trying to fix things but dont have a clue as i am a registered 

synth technician ex ensoniq i do this all the time and have had this happen a couple of times 

now on a few i have had the dacs for the cv circuits short out due to fitting the cable the wrong way round 5 volts going to the wrong pin and 12v and 0v and -12v which can really damage some ic,s some have protection as some dont some ic,s have a max voltage of 15 volts so are ok where digital ic like the cv dac only work of 5v input for icc 

now it sounds to me the guy you brought it from lied to you saying it was working as it was definitly not due to tampering

now also becuase of this you could also damage psu due to shorts to earth and negitive voltage shorting out the power rails need to test power rail supplies

write it needs to load the os before the diagnostics will work as it needs the os to do this have you got the os disk in 

can you tell me what happens does the disk boot or spin 

when the os is loaded it will do the diagnostic and the led,s will go out and the black boxes disapear on the lcd

let me know what happens

where do you live as i have a spare revision c mother board and i can test your board and swap it with a working 1 if its broken i can fix the mother board at another date

all depends on where you live uk or usa if its usa then i recoment ted  for this as you need some digital mesurement equipement and analog measure ment equipment to tell whats wrong with the mother board

as for the analog board if the cv dac is burnt out then when you play samples you would not be able to do modulation of the filter amp or panning or volume due to no cv control going to the sample and holds

i had this with a member on the furom and told him how to fix by his elimination telling me what was hapenning and what was not a new cd dac and he was away he fitted a new 1 and all was well

  So the good news is this: Jammie was right! I checked the position of the ribbon cable running between the analog board (on the bottom of the unit) and the digital board (on the top of the unit), and it turns out it had been flipped so that data line 1 of the cable did not correspond with data line 1 of the analog board pins.

  The bad news is the Emax still won't boot and now has new different/problems. I powered on/off several time in a row, and here is what I noticed:

  - All front panel lights turn on, floppy drive light is on, LCD displays black boxes across the top row and nothing on the bottom row, no progress.

  - All front panel lights turn on, floppy drive light is on, "Dynamic Allocation" light turns off after about 0:30, LCD displays black boxes across the top row and nothing on the bottom row, no progress.

  - No front panel lights turn on, LCD displays "Diagnostics" but does not run the tests, no progress.

  So guys... any ideas where I should turn next?
