on some Mac models only the modem port works for high speed communications as Apple skimped on the port circuitry for the printer port.
If you have a modem installed and the modem port is blocked off, you remove the modem and then unblock the modem port and use that port.

But again- that depends on model of Mac.

I know it is true for my 6214 Performa and was also true of my Beige G3 that I had....
