Hello all, Can't get it to work. Anyone managed to make this work? I kinda think my cable would be the issue, but I checked the pinouts and the connections are fine. My model is a 2mb stereo (2212 I believe). Anything I should check? Thanks [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

I haven't gotten this to work either (Emax I SH/HD), but use the MIDI sample dump instead, which that works fine. I know that wasn't any help to you, but I was wondering if the transfer rates were any better using the 422? Thanks, J. I havent tried my Emax 2, but my Emax 1 works fine. It did take a little figuring out. But the speed difference from MIDI to 422 made it well worth the effort. Regards. on some Mac models only the modem port works for high speed communications as Apple skimped on the port circuitry for the printer port. If you have a modem installed and the modem port is blocked off, you remove the modem and then unblock the modem port and use that port. But again- that depends on model of Mac. I know it is true for my 6214 Performa and was also true of my Beige G3 that I had.... Regards, Ted On Aug 8, 2011, at 10:18 PM, Francis Cote wrote: What do you do to make it work? Back from vacation. I've tested the serial port of my powerbook with my serial MOTU Midi timepiece and it works fine. So I guessed it had to be the cable, so i used a functional miniDin 8, clipped one end and soldered the DP9 serial connector. I used the pinout indicated on the Emulator Archives site. I checked the continuity of every pin. The cable is theoretically fine. I keep getting "Can't get keyboard map from Emax II" in Alchemy. Wether I try to send or receive I get the same error. There might be something I'm doing wrong either in Alchemy or on the Emax... Am I suppose to be an a specific module on the Emax? Is there a setting? I know Midi sample dump is suppose to work, but it's really slow and my Emax is not connected in that way (hard to explain, complicated setup. Which I will change if I really really have no choice...) Any help is welcome! Thanks On Tue, Aug 9, 2011 at 1:56 AM, Francis Cote <francis.cote@...> wrote: > I have a Powerbook G3 Wallstreet. Hi Françis, You must use the modem port with Alchemy, also you need to have the latest version of emax os, The one upgraded by the Emulator genius that did the EMXP software: http://www.emxp.net/ Some Macintosh computers models built after the Mac SE/30 models (basically any with better processors than 68030) may not have the same serial ports specs, thats why it might also not recognise the Emax even if the cable is perfect... Try first with the tweaked OS, it works here for me (Emax 1 & 2, Mac SE/30, rs422 cable) Good luck! Ah if emax 2, its the right OS version then! (2.14). Have you checked that midi is turned on in the emax? For emax 1 i think the os is version 4.0 or something like that. If it still doesnt work its ur cable that has a problem. The guy from emulatorarchive can do one for u if u ask kindly im sure of it. I can't fiind anything else but OS 2.14 for the Emax 2. I did notice on emxp.net that there own RS422 transfert program has problems with some Emax 2. The problems you have is not really the same as the problem I'm mentioning on my website - with some Emax-II the samples sent to the Emax-II through RS422 are corrupt, but even then the RS422 communication itself is working and a keymap is shown on the screen of Alchemy. Basically imo there are four possible causes of your problem: 1/ The Powerbook's serial port is not 100pct compatible with the Emax RS422 specs. This is true with many Mac computers, especially later versions... the good old mac classic and SE series and some old powerbooks (165, 180, ...) are known to be the best choice for old Emu samplers. 2/ The Emax-II's RS422 port is failing. This can be tested with the Diagnostics 3 menu in combination with a small DB9 testplug that you should build (or by wiring some pins as explained in the diagnostics guide of the Emax-II) --> did you do this test ? 3/ The cable is not OK. But that can easily be checked with a resistance/multi meter, so this is probably not the issue 4/ The setup in Alchemy is not correct. But there's really not a lot to be set up :-) Just select Emax-II in Network, and then go to Network->Instruments->Edit and make sure RS422 radiobutton is ON and the modem port is selected (and plug the cable in the modem port of course). (I'm betting on either 1/ or 2/ !) ///E-Synthesist --- In emax@yahoogroups.com, Francis Cote <francis.cote@...> wrote:

Ok... Number 1 would be consistent other reponses I got. What bothers me is the fact that I have seen this "complete kit" that includes a Wallstreet G3 powerbook and an Emax 2 (they suppposedly worked... That is what I had seen on Ebay). Number 2, I have to check because I got my Emax abobut a month ago... So no, I haven't done that test and I'll have to research this for sure. I'll start with number 2. I don't have a classic Mac to test with (I had a few, they ended up in 3 feet of water on spring morning. They didn't like for some reason). Thanks a lot you guys for the help. esythesist is THE emulator man here Franis. Recheck the setup in Alchemy, it doesnt always work the first time. I know that Emax I and II can use the same sample editors, they share the exact same parameters or quite, it should work, if not it can only be a faulty cable or RS422 faulty connector on the Emax, as i said 68040 Mac sometimes cant sync to 500.000kbits as they would with older Macs, this is due to hardware changes on the motherboard of each Macs... exemple, PowerPc Powermac can sync to Emulator II, but wouldnt sync to emax, with RS422, impossible to explain why... those mac are using high speed serial up to 115000kbits in normal modem use, but might be unable to sync to emax speed. I noticed that Emax transfer rate is slightly slower than Emulator II, this could come from the Emax OS implementing a datatransfer protocol that would check more what is going in and out the RS422 port. i have a powerbook G3 wallstreet, it doesnt send stuff thru RS422, does the same than you... i guess you'll have to buy an older powerbook, as said by E-Synthesist, for some great compatibility the best is really mac SE, or SE/30 (this model is much faster than the SE) Le 1 sept. 2011 à 22:20, Francis Cote a écrit :

An easy way to start testing might be to try the MIDI dump, and is probably easier than building a cable. If the cable you build is not done correctly the test obviously won't work. I use this setup with my Emax 1 and it works fine (although it is very slow...). Do make sure to use the modem port, though, as has been previously stated. I realize this isn't your goal to have it set up this way, but If it works, at least it will tell you if the serial port is functioning as it should on the Mac side (if you hadn't already tested it). Also, it will give you a good idea what to expect from Alchemy (in terms of what accessing the Emax from Alchemy looks like). From there, you'll still have the RS422 issues, but maybe a few less variables to interfere with your testing. Good luck, and keep the group updated. I'd definitely be interested to know where you get. J.

Thanks for confirming this. This will add yet another machine to my pile of useless junk! :) Sad, It's a sexy machine. I know the cable is fine. I tested the resistance many times with my multimeter. On the subject, is 4mb of RAM enough to run Alchemy? I'd prefer to find some 030 machine if possible. Would I be ok with any 030 machine? P.S. Why are you writing my name with "" instead of a "c"? It's a French language error! Just messing with you. Thanks Johnny, I have tested the RS422 port with a MOTU Midi Timepiece AV MIDI interface (old serial model) and it works fine. Hi, I found a diagnostic guide for Emax but not for Emax 2 on the group's files section. I saw a sort of Rs422 in it, is it the same for the Emax 2? I've been reviewing this thread, and I have a question for Ted Summers. You wrote you had to remove the modem from your Performa 6214 and a beige G3, am I to assume you were able to transfert samples from them to you Emax? Seriously, guys, am I breaking my balls for nothing? Here is where my state of mind is at this moment... And I really need your advice because you've had an Emax for a long time and I haven't. I drive I use in the Emax is a Zip drive, and it works fine. I have a pile of disks gathered of the time. I got myself a USB 250 MB Zip drive and I was able to put some banks using EMXP, in a VirtualBox running XP on my Macbook pro. That, well, put a doubt in my mind because if EMXP enables me to "dump" samples into a preset on a Zip disk, I have no need for another machine piled up on my desk. Here are the computers and other things I have. I'm looking for suggestions. My goal is to simplify my sample transfers. And I also have other samplers I used to transfert with SCSI from a PC, but that PC needs to be transformed into a NAS. So I'm loosing it... SO I will list those as well. Here it goes: - Powerbook G3 Wallstreet II - Powermac G4 MDD Dual 867, with an Adaptec AHA-2940U Scsi card. - MacBook Pro 15" late 2008. - 250mb USB Zip drive, Zip 100 SCSI on the Emax 2. Samplers - Emax 2, Zip 100 SCSI. - E-Mu E-Synth Classic Dance version, internal 2GB Jaz - Yamaha A3000 V2, internal Zip 100 SCSI - Akai S950 (Floppy, but I'm suppose to get my hands on a SCSI card for it from a friend) - Roland S550, External Zip 100. Help.... Yes, I read in full banks and sent them back. But that was an Emax 1. At the time I didn't have an Emax 2. I would have to look at the schematic, but I BELIEVE the Emax 1 and 2 the RS-422 circuit is the same. Where I had the "bad" port or a bad cable, the send wouldn't work either..... If it worked with your Emax 2, that demonstrates that the ports on Powerpc machines work. Which a bit contradicts what I've seen in responses... I wonder if I remove the internal modem from the powerbook... It might work. It's a PITA to "play" in these machines but it's worth a try.
