I wouldn't even try the 2gb card. The SE update has nothing to do with the issue. It really is a flipped bit in the 93C06 EEPROM and what is added in the OS on the disk. Now, whether or not the PLUS OS 1.0 (SE + HD) has any fix that would help your issue, I cannot say. On The PCD-50b there is a Write Protect Jumper in a separate location, if I recall correctly. Have you removed that?
